Howdy all,
I've come across a description for a Dobro for sale that sounds interesting, and a little dubious: "Dobro brand, square neck, but has only one "little hole" above the resonator, not two "little holes", asking $300." Well, I don't know too much about Dobros, and the one "little hole" thing sounds weird, but I'd thought I'd throw it up here to see if anyone might be familiar with this guitar. (I've always wanted to get one, and this is a price I can handle...but it does sound odd). Ring any bells?

Cliff,
If the single "little hole" has a screen in it, that model is referred to as the "Cyclops" model and is fairly rare. I think all of the Cyclops models were made in the mid-30's, but I'm not really an expert in dating Dobros. It probably could be made to sound great with a new Quarterman cone and a proper set-up.

Hey, Thanks Mike--that's probably what it is. Are there any things to keep an eye out for with the Cyclops or with Dobros that are that old, and is $300 a fair price, do you think?

| Cliff, check out Brad's Page of Steel (our section moderator Brad Bechtel). If I remember correctly, he has a picture of a Cyclops somewhere on his webpage. $300 sounds good to me for any 1930's vintage instrument in good playable condition. |

A word of caution as I own a cyclops that was built in the early 80's. It's a low end instrument that was built along the lines of a Model 60F. Stain finish, no binding.
