Hi all,
my Fender 1000 had an inoperative tone control and a noisy switch. I replaced the tone cap last night, and replaced the switch with a new CRL switch.
So now, the neck nearest me works great. Tone control and volume work as expected. However, on the other neck the tone acts like a volume control. I've checked the wiring many times, all solder joints are nice and it should work!
Any clues?

Does the two necks have seperate volume/tone controles? (Don't know too much about the Fender 1000).
For the event that the capacitor has a short, it would theoretic'ly make the tone-controle act as an "adjustable" short, effectively acting as a volume-pot.
Hope it helps

It's basically wired like a telecaster, so only one tone and volume control for both necks.
Position 1, far neck. Position 2, both necks (pickups in parallel), Position 3, near neck. The tone control works fine if it's switched for the near neck or both necks. Far neck only, the tone is like a volume (well, ish - it's not linear).
So, I think the cap's OK, as are the pots. All I'm left with is the switch, but I can't see how.

Hmmmm. Really mysterious!
This is quite simple circuitry. You say that you've exchanged the pickup switch. The only reason which immediately comes to mind is, that you might have switched a couple of wires as you put the new one in. I fail to imagine how, though.
(scratching my head) ???

I don't believe I have. Black from each pickup grounded on the back of the volume pot, white to the switch.
I'm going to try wiring the pickup directly to the volume pot later, unless anyone has any other ideas!

You have a wiring error, or a bad or incorrect switch. There can be no other explanation for what you describe. |

Ian!
I would like to see what's up.
Do you have the ways and means to make a digital photo of the circuitry to post here?
PS. I think that we should prepare ourselves for B0b moving this topic to the electronics section.

Sure, I can take a pic. However, I wired the pickup direct to the volume put and it still does the same thing.

I really have great difficulties imagining what could be the problem here.
Apparantly the problem is only with one of two (identical?) pick-ups.
Another reason, for the event that the pick-ups have different impedances, could be that the chosen capacitor is too big, i.e. filtering too much of the frequency range of one of the pick-ups out, psycologic'ly making the resulting tone-controle "sound" like a volume controle, but I fear that's pretty far fetched.
A couple of pics just might be helpful here.
