I know Neil Flanz for more than 35 years now, only later I found he recorded two solo albums.
I was Lucky to find both albums and some obscure stuff he played on.
I still play his albums once in a while and i really like them.
Nice to see that every steel lover and Neil Flanz fan can listen to it too, even without having a turntable. |

Thanks for this, Olaf! I bought this recording of Neil's that you have shown us while I was working in Ontario in 1965. I NEVER thought I would ever meet him & become a friend. Here's a photo I took of Neil two years ago at Scotty's last ISGC in 2015. Note that Neil was the last person to be inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame and the only NON-American to be inducted!

I shared a stage with Neil for a couple of years, and I'm proud to call him a friend. Quite a guy...

Neil is the reason I got into playing steel guitar. I would see him playing at the Country Palace in Montreal (back when I had pimples) and I just had to get one of "those guitars!" It took awhile but I did. I also saw him a few years later at Deemons Den in Nashville TN. Sadly, Neil is underrated.... an excellent steel player!!! One of my favourites!! |

I never met Neil but he is the one that finally got me on track with "Pedal steel guitar" with his album from Sho-bud 'Special instructions'. I learned a lot from that album sometime about 1971.

I think I may have had that one! I had some type of instructional material from Neil. I am not sure if it was issued by Sho Bud, but I distinctly remember that the voice over on the album said "mash pedals A and B."
It was my first instructional course and may have been the only one back in the day!! I learned a lot from it! |

That's the same album. I remember that instead of saying 'push' pedals the voice said 'mash'. Good instruction, tho!

Yes John that was it. !!! It was a great instructional method. Not full of theory etc, but it got you started out so that you could do a gig flying by the seat of your pants!
To this day that and the C6 Chord Manual that Neil put out have helped me more that 75% of the stuff that I have purchased. I met Neil two times. Once in Montreal and once when Phil Kaufman introduced me to him in Gnash - Ville. Of course back in those days I doubt anyone remembers much! |
