As many know(and even lloyd..ha..I use to kid him about it); I base my whole musical expression on my greatest influence; "Mr. Nashville Sound" Lloyd Green.
Here is an example of that:
Dale Watson and I certainly came up with some great stuff in our time. Here's one nobody knows how/why it was written. I showed Dale a old Lloyd Green intro I just tabbed out for a bunch of steel players and he loved it so much he said:"Ricky I'm going to write a song that I want you to play that intro on and that style...here ya go>

Thank you Lloyd and I know back then when I played you the actual cut from his CD.: You said:"Ricky, that is very nice; but it has already been played. Now I want to hear YOU play what YOU feel from now on"...and as you know; I have and thank you for that influence too.

Thanks Ricky for that little ditty. I saw you years back when you were with Dale in Chapel Hill, NC in a hole in the wall bar near the campus. But boy was it good. Up close and personal. But you two swap licks all night long. What a great show you put on. Thanks, J.R. Rose _________________ NOTHING..Sold it all. J.R. Rose |

That's great! I love Dale Watson's stuff. I noticed you had a Fender console set up. Do you take that with you often? |

There was also the time that Dale Watson and his band of strapping good ol’ Texan boys bowled up to the buffet in the green room and the caterer apologized for not having anything vegetarian on the menu – and the band just looked at her uncomprehendingly.
From notes on Studio 22 , the show this was recorded on in Sydney |

Thanks Gary those are mighty nice words; and yes, me and my ex-wife Miss Leslie certainly made some good music together before we split up in 2012...but the best thing we made was my Daughter Emilee; now in Second grade as I snapped pic of first day this year..yeeehaaa.

Ricky,
One of my favorite shows of your's was at the Rodeo Bar in NYC on a cold winter night years back, the rodeo is gone, but my memories are still intact. Then there was a show at the Black Cat in Austin during SXSW probably 15 years ago.
Keep up the great work and take care of your daughter, I have two of them myself and one is in Lubbock at school, I miss her dearly _________________ Regards, Craig

Yeah Ricky that's a great intro to a great song and you did a great job! I learned it a couple years ago but then I thought what the heck am I gonna do with it so when I get the chance in a west coast type of groove, I'll do bits of it in a solo. Love that stuff! |

Ricky,
Very nice work on that song! It appears that you were using a Sho-Bud round front Pro II with a Fender Twin on that recording...is this correct?
It sounded like Ralph Mooney's intro to Rainy Day Woman to some degree--Bakersfield style.
I'd like to see more of these if you have them.

Way Cool Craig....thanks for kind words; but my days with Dale are over about 15 years ago...ha...but my Current(keep up the great work)is with www.weldonhenson.com
Yes Don; that was my early round front Pro-II and always played it through Fender tube amp.
As for more of that show with Dale from 1998; you can see all 7 of them on my video page(and also the show on the Grand old Opry we did and another just instrumental song for one of the many Richard Linklater movie soundtracks I've done) You have to go to my page on Facebook and then click "Photos" then "Album" then "Videos"...and they're all in there.

I heard that Pro2 live in Madison Wisconsin a few years ago when you were with Dale and it sounded as good or better live as it does on here. |

I remember some years back I was in need of a part for my Bud & Ricky saw my post here. Low and behold a few days later I received the part in the mail (it was a small part, but needed) from Ricky, nothing owed.
This made a huge impression on me for the kindness this man showed.
I have never had a chance to meet Ricky, but he will always be a friend to me. _________________ steelguitarguy.com |
