A "late night - coffeed up" question came up about the guess-timated total number of pedal steel guitars in existence. How many are there?

Totaling up the production of the big names; Sho-Bud, Emmons, MSA, Carter, Wright / Sierra, et cetera, would get us us close. Then add in Ampeg, Bigsby... whatever.

What is YOUR guess-timate?

At last count I found 57,475, but I might have misplaced a post it or 4.

Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but there's a difference between how many have been built and how many are in existence. A lot of old clunkers have been cut up, junked, parted out, destroyed in fires, drowned in floods, etc.

I can't imagine any way to get any kind of accurate number in answer to Dan's question.

Just for sh_ts 'n giggles, my guess would be...a whole heck of lot more than there are players!

Good thought Ross! Instead of looking at the "supply side" of the equation (ie how many were produced) looking at the "demand side" might make more sense.

Let's say;
1) There are 17011 Registered users on the Steel Guitar Forum (subtract 4 for registered users that are Dobro players and subtract 13 for lap steel players which nets out to 16,994).
2) That number represents 80% of all the PSG players in the world; Therefore, total worldwide PSG player population is 21,242.5.(Are ya with me so far???)
3) That each PSG player owns an average of 2.7058 Pedal Steel Guitars.

Therefore, we have now PROVEN, beyond any reasonable doubt, that Doug's number of 57,479 is absolutely correct (I think).
