Several members have asked for some info with regards the recent releases of classic Hawaiian restorations on my Cumquat label. So here goes.
I first became involve with the great Hawaiian masters back in 1941, when at the age of 16 I took up steel. By '43 I was playing as a semi-pro in a nightclub act, in Armed Forces hostels etc. And had accumulated a massive collection of Haw 78s and radio transcriptions. By '46 an interest in modern jazz guitar was pushing the steel aside and when I entered fulltime music in 1949 it was pushed onto the backburner. Out of sight out of mind until 1982 when an interest resurfaced. From 1949 until 1985 I was fully employed as one of Australia's most in demand session men, jazz guitarist, composer - arranger - conductor & musical director. For some twenty years during that time I Owned and ran one of Aussie's three top music production houses, created over 3000 music productions for radio, TV, films and records. I worked with everybody and his duck: Sinatra, Torme, Dizzy Gillespie, Henry Mancini, Jerry Byrd etc etc.
And since I had access to great sound engineers I kept all of those old 78s updated into the most advanced technology (at that time 30IPS tape).
When I retired from playing professionally I decided to convert the 44 plus albums I had made (and fortunately owned)to the CD format and sell them via the internet. While my son, Dallas was still finalising the bits of the site. I decided to develop the best possible approach to converting those beloved old 78s of my youthful years. It was a time and money consuming challenge as I struggled to get them as close to perfect as possible. I felt that most of the attempts at restoration that I'd heard were either still full of clicks 'n pops or in some way diminished the magic. Japanese attempts were really a turn off. The whole project was purely for my own satisfaction - and I hoped for a few friends: Jerry Byrd, Dirk Vogel and one or two others. But then the custard tart hit the fan, word spread everywhere - through HSGA, Aloha International, various UK mags and newsletters and within weeks orders came in from: Iceland, Germany, Hawaii, USA, UK & Japan. Never in my wildest dreams did I think so many people would be on that old steel wavelength. Then Forum member Graham Griffiths notified me that 'guys were asking where, what and why. And so they became fixtures on our Cumquat records site.
Others are in the pipeline, apart from my own collection Dirk Vogel is forever helpful and I doubt if I would have gone overboard like I have without his encouragement. Bruce,
I went to the Cumquat website and noticed that you will soon be taking online orders. This is fantastic! Let the credit card companies deal with the monetary rate of exchange and no need for customers to navigate international mail. As soon as this service is available I'll begin placing orders. Good job.
