I've got another one of my questions that may seem odd to some but I'm just wondering what brands of steel guitars will you find in the areas where players live? I'll divide this by north, south, east and west in the USA. Here in the south, Mississippi, it seems like you see more Emmons. What brand do you mainly play? For me, Carter.

100% Carter in my area....since I own the only pedal steel within 250 miles or so. It used to be 100% Sho-Bud,, but I sold it to a guy on Baffin Island. He's probably the only steel player in Canada more isolated than me

Not many steels down here in Central Mexico, that I know of. I only have my old MSA Classic now, I know of only 3 other people in Mexico with pedal steels, one has an old MSA Classic, another has a Carter Starter, a Thomas U-12 and just ordered a new Williams, and another 'way up north in Chihuahua has a Carter D-10 (I think).

We see all kinds here in North California. I've noticed an increase in Carters over the last few years, but I think that's happening everywhere.

At our Florida Steel Guitar Club monthly jams there is a wide assortment and not one predominant model.

However, when I lived in Kansas City, Mo the predominant steel there, obviously, was Zumsteel's since they were made there.

I've seen pictures from some of the regional steel guitar shows and I've noticed more of one brand than another and it's usually the "local" brand. e.g. the last pictures I saw of a Colorado show, there were a lot of Mullen guitars, which are made in Colorado.

In the Virginia/North Carolina area I see more Emmons than anything else and actually see more Marlens than ShoBuds...JH in Va.

yup mainly ZUM here in the ozarks. In fact I went to a jam and was the only guitar that wasn't a ZUM. Felt real awkward especially when I looked up and Bruce himself was looking at my JCH. hehehehehehe
My next ax will be a ZUMMER!!!!!Great guitars in my own backyard. I am not mechanically inclined by no means so would be nice to have a tech right down the road.

I've been playing guitar (not steel) for almost thirty years and throughout that time the predominant brands were MSA or Sho-Bud. I've seen a few oddball brands too. I've seen only half a dozen doubleneck PSGs here in my lifetime so far, including my own.

To add to Tim's central Illinois list we have sold several GFI guitars recently to folks in Illinois - Jerry Erickson just picked up a nice D-10 Keyless. Bob Watson also has a Push Pull now. I also know of a couple other Carter owners, a lefty Pedalmaster, a Sierra single 12, a few Legrande III owners (myself included) and a couple MSA Millennium owners too.

Hi Bill, What is your friend doing on Baffin Island? We used to fly there in the 1950s and during the summer the mosquitos (man I mean huge) would swarm like crazy. I wonder if the old sunken barge in still there?

Push -pull territory here. That would be Emmons push-pull for you newbies that don't know. And a few Buds.

Charles, I don't know the guy from Baffin Island at all...he saw my old Sho-Bud on eBay last year and bought it. But I remember him saying that he used to live in the Ottawa area and I believe he moved up there to work for the Nunavut dept of transport in the town of Iqaluit. I also remember that it cost him some serious dollars to have the guitar shipped up there as you might imagine. Where I live is almost metropolitain compared to Iqaluit.

Out here in NZ there is a bit of a mixture, I have a Zum and a Carter, I know of at least one other Carter, a MCI, a JCH, a Emmons Legrande, 2 Emmons Push Pulls, several ShoBud D10's, a LDG and several Sierras --- I think there might even be an old Dekley or 2 floating about under someones bed.

this area has several Shobuds, 1 Marlen that I can think of, no Emmons at all. 1 Remington and quite a few GFI models, and a few BMI's that I can think of.

Of the 7 steel players that I know that live in or around EL Dorado, 4 play Emmons, 1 plays a Zum, and two Mullens. I play a RP Mullen and wouldn't trade it for any other brand.
But for Arkansas as a whole, there are probly more Emmons guitars than any other brand.

Here in northeast MS, it's Sho~Bud 7, Mullen 2, Zumsteel 2, Carter 2, Fender pedal 1, Fender non-pedal with pedals added 1, Howard 1, MSA 1, Mooney 2, Emmons Legrande 1, Dekley 1.

Those are all I can think of at the moment.

Four Emmons Push Pulls one Promat and one GFI within 12 miles. Within forty miles one MSA one Fulawka three Sho Buds and another GFI. And that`s just the north of Scotland.
