For a Carter guitar.
I want to replace all my dog bones with the threaded barrels. I would need 40 or so. I cant find round 3/16 diameter 5/16 long 4-40 thread BRASS standoffs. I can drill my own. Al brisco is way too expensive. I can find them at Mouser in aluminum and stainless. Would either of these work?

I've only had 2 break, but have several that aren't far from breaking. Plus, it is far easier to rod the guitar, adjust slack, and balance pulls. I've already done the A, B, and C pedals.

Stainless will be stronger than brass. Aluminum should be fine too, as the clamp would likely slip before the barrel would break. Also try a google image search for "cable stop" or "cable end" or "barrel end clamp" if you haven't already. There are lots of similar items out there, you might find something ready made in the correct size. These are throttle cable clamps for a Ducati (about 7/32" diam, so a little too big):

If you scroll down through this Carters parts list that Al Brisco has on his website, you will find "Barrell Nuts" ... these are the correct size to replace the Dogbones, and you don't have to put that ridiculous loop in the end of the rod !! :-}

Yes, but they are $10 each. For what I want to do, that would run me $500. I'll be able to do both necks for under $100 for aluminum and $150 for stainless. I want to re-rod each neck as I take the changers apart to clean.

I'd pick SS over aluminum, but I think Carter used brass for a good reason.
"Alloys such as brass and bronze are often chosen for bearings, bushings, and other sliding applications because of their resistance to galling, as well as other forms of mechanical abrasion."

I ordered some from Mouser and drilled the hole so that the pull rod could slide through. Fits perfectly in the carter bell crank. Will also work with others. 4-40 thread for the allen screw.

Ron, you've got it figured out. Are those aluminum?
Headless 4-40 set screws would help avoid interference with an adjacent bell-crank.
Pkg of 100 for $10. Fits inside one end of the standoff. May be more diffucult to secure compared to the screw with larger hex-head.
