Topic: Help please: Loud "pop" when turn amp off... |

| When I turn my amp off I get a LOUD 'pop'(startels me every time). Any theories? My amp is seperate from my speakers if that makes a difference. |

I've seen this happen in SS amps over the years, and it is usually caused by an arch across the power switch when it is shut off.
You didn't say if the volume was turned all the way down when you shut it off, I assume so.
If it is the switch, they are quick to replace.
If not the switch, uneven power supply voltages will sometimes cause this.

Peter, that's a common characteristic of low-end solid-state gear. Unless you turn down the volume, you get a "pop" on shutdown. High end solid-state amps have a muting circuit that prevents these extraneous noises, but musical instrument amps (even the best of them), aren't really "high end" audio gear. I've heard of techs replacing op-amps and electrolytics in some instrument amplifiers, and having temporary success reducing the noise, only to have it return in a year or so.
Apparently, it's just not a big priority with the manufacturers, and we have to live with it!  |

| I get a sort of pop when I shut down an old Standel I've got here. It's not loud at all but I don't play it loud either. |

try unplugging your cord first. then , if the amp has a standby swtich engage that . then flip the OFF switch. that should eliminate the POP.
I have a Vibrolux Custom tube amp. I get a pop when I just go to OFF. not loud, but I dont like it.
using the above procedue the pop is gone.

| Randy, this is a solid state amp and I don't have a stand by switch. When you say cord, I assume you mean the patch cord from instrument to amp, is that right? |

yup, the patch cord or the cord that goes into the instrument, to be more clear.
solid states dont have a standby switch....duh, that makes sense...what's to wam up.
anyway, try unplugging the cord before switching off. I have a feeling that should work. |

| could be a filter cap discharging way to fast, I thought of a relay in the output to the speaker that powers off fast, that might work |

| It is a filter cap discharging too fast, this cap probably has a minimal rating to it and needs changed, I have a Randall RG300 solid state amp and I changed my caps because of popping and to quiet the background hiss noise I get from it. |
