Topic: Where to buy the best cables |

I recently had a near catastrophic situation with my set up (Telonics Mini Rack, Telonics FP-100 pedal and George L's cables). I sent the pedal and amp to Dave Beatty and he identified the problem with the cables and he suggested using Neutrik or Amphenol plugs. Can anyone direct me to someone who builds cables with these plugs? I am a half-assed solderer or I would do them my self.

I can think of a couple ideas:
Have Jim and his shop make them and ship them to you. Shipping might be costly.
You're VERY near Tom Bradshaw; I bet he could do it,but I dunno he's interested in the job. Ask him. I think he's in Richmond.
Go to your local guitar and amp tech, ask them to make you custom cables.

You can also contact forum member Marvin Born.
He can make cables for you in any length & he hand solders
all the plugs on & tests all connections.
They are very good cables.

With all due respect to Dave Beaty, an obviously capable electronics person, what were the problems to which the George L's cables contributed or caused?
Do GL's cables not work well with Telonics products? |

I won't speak for Dave but I can say he told me that the intermittent signal issues were attributed to the George L's that I was using. I will take his suggestion of getting a different cable with better ends like Neutrik. I was using brass plugs that actually tarnished badly from use.

Thanks Steve. So it was the brass plugs at issue. I think those have been discontinued by George L's a few years ago.

Thanks. I love their products. I have a Mini Rack and for playing out, it's the best amp I have ever had. However, if I was 30 years younger I would be playing out with my other amp which is a Fryette 2-90-02, Sarno Revelation and a Lexicon 200. That baby weighs 80 pounds but sounds better than any amp I have ever used. But for 30 pounds, the Telonics is unbeatable.

I buy my Neutrik connectors and Canare cable from these guys:

They also will custom make cables for you.
Before that I would check to make sure they will fit in your rig. Maybe you just need some new GL plugs and a wire cutter.

I used to use a nearly identical system ! I thought there would never be anything even close to that level of tone until I checked out Milkman amps. The half and half is worth looking at if you miss those full, focused mids and clear sweet highs. It's hard to beat tubes !

If the real problem here was tarnished (or dirty or corroded or whatever) plugs (and/or jacks), I have news for you. That can happen with any jack or plug. Cable, effect box, guitar, amp........whatever.
Brass plugs may or may not be more prone to this. I don't know.
I have had this happen occasionally, mostly with my pedals. I leave them set up in one spot and never move them around. Every so often I'll get an intermittent or scratchy thing going on. Unplugging/plugging the offending effects box a couple of times does the trick.
And FWIW, all of my cables are George L .155. And I have a LOT of them (currently about 10 effects plus or minus). And in over 10 years of using them I have had one, maybe two, go flaky. They were both right angle, and they were both fixed in minutes. |

That's what I use; Hosaâ„¢ cables. A few Livewire, also. I stopped using George L cables a long time ago. Solderless is a great concept...but they have come loose on me, loosing my signal...at some important gigs. I also think they are way too thin in diameter, to give a great signal to your guitar & gear.
I like the Hosa brand...& they are not very expensive. I get mine from Amazon.

Steve, from your explanation I gather the plug ends are the issue with the George L's hence the suggestion for the Neutrik plugs.
The George L cables themselves should be sturdy enough if they are handled properly. Rolled like a lasso instead of bunched like clothes line rope as they are COAX type cables and are not as limp as other cables.
I have never had problems with mine but do have Switchcraft or G&H plugs on the ends as soldering is the best insurance of non failure.
George L's cable with G&H copper tip plugs I made.
If you want to buy ready made, Mogami coax cable with Neutrik ends here's some off the top:

This is premium grade cable and connectors with the soldering done for you.
Keep in mind that all cables, plugs, sound different and while I like my George L's cables sound, if reliability is your main issue and you don't like soldering then these might be the way to go if you can't find someone in your area to source.
