Hello Guys, This is my first post. I am new to the forum and steel in general, but am loving it! I love a lot of the traditional players out there, but love some of the odd ball stuff and thought you may enjoy this -

Hey Matt...Daniel Lanois is a serious tone monster on whatever instrument he chooses. I was on the same gig with him in Toronto a number of years back and got to see him in sound check and of course during his set that night. He uses some pretty funky gear but really gets the job done. Welcome to the forum. |

Hey, Matt, welcome to the forum. There have been discussions of Lanois over the years, and I too enjoy his tone and the experimental nature of his playing style. (I am a "bare finger" picker, like him. And also enjoy a glass of Scotch perching on my steel!)
I've read that pedal steel was actually his very first instrument. I would think most of us played other instruments first, for me trumpet and guitar. I've also read he only owns one, that LDG Sho-Bud SD-10, but the amazing thing (to me) is he plays a '53 gold-top Les Paul, live. Most would keep that baby in a vault! _________________ "Just because you're not a drummer doesn't mean you don't have to keep time." Thelonious Monk |

Hey Kevin...Lanois was using an old Jazzmaster through a Vox AC 30 when I saw him. Not exactly a guitar you'd of as rich sounding, but it's all in the hands as they say. I'm pretty certain he doesn't baby his gear, not so sure that steel was his first instrument tho. |

Hi Matt, welcome to the steel guitar.
If that's the kind of music you like on steel and you want to be pointed in the right direction for more of it, send me a message. A couple of years ago, I had a period where I developed a deep interest in some of the more creative steel guitar music out there and I'd be happy to tell you where to look.
I saw Daniel Lanois in concert in 2015 and it was the best sounding show I've heard. The man obsesses over sound and we are luckier for that fact.
I'm currently noodling around with a song from another non-traditional steel guitar instrumentalist - Bruce Kaphan. https://youtu.be/m9iFhCRdXok I think it sounds even better coming out of my amp than on the recording. |

I've seen Lanois perform a few times, including a show on the For The Beauty of Wynona tour. He only played guitar and Vox mando-guitar in all settings, but it was the most glorious guitar and amp communion I've ever heard. Very lo-fi, humming, squealing, etc., when he played every note had personality and meaning.
I saw him in a drummer-less setting with Emmylou. This was a magical night--just him, Daryl Johnston and Emmylou, with a guest appearance by the drummer from Luscious Jackson, who Lanois had just finished producing (really cool record, btw). _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
