I was pleasantly surprised to receive the new GFI S-10SM that I ordered from Sam Ash arrive on Saturday. So far I am pretty impressed. Seems to tune up and hold tune very well and has a nice sound for a student guitar. Well built, stable and pedals and levers work very nicely. Been putting in a lot of practice on it and things that I learned a few years ago are beginning to click again. Only thing I notice is a slight squeak on the B pedal, which I'm sure I can track down and correct if it doesn't go away with a bit of playing. Very happy. _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. Behringer Reverb Pedal. |

Thanks for the review!
I think I read somewhere that the copedant and levers on that guitar are fixed, i.e., you can't set it up for Day or rearrange the levers.
Is that true? |

Yes, that is my understanding, but E9 is what I wanted to learn anyway, so that wasn't a concern for me. _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. Behringer Reverb Pedal. |

B pedals are notorious for squeaking. I just turn up my amp. |

Hi Jim,
How long did you have to wait for the GFI? I called Sam Ash on Friday about availability since they're out of stock but the salesman didn't know how long it would be. He thought GFI only sends steels to the warehouse when they received an order...he estimated about a month. |

I think I possibly bought the last one they had. I ordered it on Thursday and got it on Saturday. When I was discussing it with the sales guy I asked him how many they had on hand and his reply was "this is the last one". To be honest, I figured this was a sales tactic, but apparently not. I really didn't call intending to make a purchase, but they knocked $200 off and gave me 12 months no interest financing, so I couldn't pass it up. You could probably order direct from GFI and get it about as quickly or maybe faster. You would also have your choice of color, and shorter or longer legs if you want.
All I've ever seen on Ash are black and standard height. I really prefer the black finish anyway though.
I'm a bit on the short side and wouldn't mind if it were a little shorter, but I think it will be ok as is, and it's easier to re-sell a standard height one, so I'm not going to mess with trying to lower it.
I will say one thing for sure though, I've owned two Carter Starters in the past, and this guitar is far superior to them. The knee levers actually work with little pressure and normal travel, and are adjustable to some degree. It also has an aluminum frame and is very stable on it's feet. _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. Lol, I'll do that tonight Rick. As long as I don't have to let anybody hear me (attempt to) play it.
I'm afraid I'm going to wear the A & B pedals out on "Amazing Grace". _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. Behringer Reverb Pedal. |

When I was in the market for this guitar, Sam Ash was the only mail order music store that carried it, and they were 2 months out before next shipment. I shopped elsewhere and got lucky with a different guitar. |

Order your GFI from the company. Cheaper and more choices. _________________ I don't know much but what I know I know very well.

I don't know if it will be any cheaper than what I paid, but I agree, you have more options by ordering direct. _________________ GFI SM10 3/4, 1937 Gibson EH-150, 2 - Rondo SX Lap Steels and a Guyatone 6 String C6. Peavey 400 and a Roland 40 Amps. Behringer Reverb Pedal. |
