Watch this video of Jerry Byrd, and notice how the entire steel guitar moves while he's playing. This has to have an effect on the tone. If you keep your steel still and move the instrument it has the same relative motion.

This effect is magnified by the fact that Jerry is playing standing up, with the legs extended.
If he had the guitar across his lap it would be more stable, and not move.

So, that's the question. Does your tone sound different when you have the legs fully extended and let the guitar oscillate on its own.
