I bought an MXR resonator and used it for awhile powered off my power supply for the rest of my effects and it worked for awhile and then quit working after looking at the power plug it says 18 volts i never thought that it might be a different voltage. Anyway anybody have an idea how bad i messed it up and if it is an easy fix or a job for a pro electronics guy I guess that is what you get for taking anything for granted. Thanks in advance for any help you can give. Jerry |

I have one and did that accidentally also.
I am pretty sure if it works you are fine. |

What you are asking is a can of worms...
Basically there are 3 different power connections:
- DC voltage, center or tip of pin positive polarity and the barrel or sleeve of pin negative polarity.
- DC voltage, center or tip negative polarity and the barrel or sleeve of pin positive polarity.
- AC voltage which has no polarity.
If you have a DC pedal and reverse the polarity damage may or may not occur. If the design incorporates a protection diode or circuit no damage generally occurs. If there is not protection diode or circuit damage most likely occurs.
Applying DC to an AC pedal likely will not cause damage unless the internal bridge or diode specs are exceeded.
Applying AC to a DC pedal is kinda unknown without knowing more about the circuit of the pedal.
Applying a voltage lower than rated likely will not damage anything.
Applying a voltage higher than rated will likely do damaged. Most pedals tend to use parts with voltage ratings very close to the rated input spec.

If you didn't cross polarity, but just fed it half voltage, it is probably OK.
If you crossed polarity, it is either totally fried or fine (if it has protection diodes, it's fine). _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

You would think a designer in this country would know to keep the polarity in the norm to avoid confusion as well as the common voltage or at least have it marked where you can read it in dim light I used it off and on for a year or better before it quit. Should come with a power supply if it is oddball. I looked inside and nothing looks fried. I just ordered a power supply that furnishes an 18 volt output to see if it works. thanks for input |

I have one of those power strips for wall warts and one of the outlets is for 18 volt. |

There is a standard 9v polarity and plug for musical gear.
Unfortunately 9VDC computer gear uses the same plug but the opposite polarity. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Jerry, they come new with the 18V power supply. I tell my two apart because the 18V says "Dunlop" on it. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I test drove the unit, and liked it. But the powered effects loop in the Steelaire is only 9 volts, so I opted for a different unit instead, and had it hard wired into the amp.
I got a Dunlop Q-zone pedal, which can be set to give a pretty good Dobro simulation. The pedal has been discontinued, but used ones turn up on E-bay and Reverb all the time. _________________ Please visit my web site and Soundcloud page and listen to the music posted there.

In my experience, running a 18 volt pedal on a 9 volt power supply doesn't do any damage. It just hobbles the effect's, well... effect. _________________ Sho~Bud Super Pro, Fender Concert, NV400, Orange, (LP's, Tele's, Gretsch, Burns, etc...) |

I bought this on the forum but I guess some people sell things that are just part of what they got with it without telling prospective buyers it is incomplete any way I have a power block on the way and will see if it just got tired running on 9volts or something else . Is Tom Bradshaw still in business or not. |

Pretty certain that he is. And if you were to contact him, I'm also certain he would bend over backwards to get you the correct power supply.

It sure isn't Tom's fault that somebody supplied you with the wrong power supply. |

I'm not blaming him I was just wondering why not stay with the most used 9 volt that most pedals use |

Chances are it's because of the way the unit is designed.
Why do some cars come with 4 cylinder motors, some with 6 cylinder motors and some with 8 cylinder motors? |

Or to give them the right power for the job. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Ken, he bought it second hand, without adapter. If there's no adapter, I'd expect it to be sans instructions. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

If you look where the little thingy goes into the pedal, it tells what the power requirements are. |

I wasn;t bashing Tom. I was just curious as to why the 18 volt thing does it have some advantage over 9 volt as I thought I made a post but it may be going around in outer space because it ain't here. I stated I have a good pedal power block on the way. I found a china made wall wort 16 volt my meter showed 18.2 volts pluged it in it worked but was some noisy china junk should work ok with a good power supply sorry didn't mean to ruffle any feathers kind makes you not want to ask questions. |

I didn't see what looked to me like ruffled feathers.
I'm going to assume that something in that case (possibly an IC chip, but I dunno) is a component or circuit not native to the 9VDC world and wants to see 18.
It's a shame that the seller didn't include the wallwart. S/he knew it's an 18VDC box _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
