Sweet, a Ross Shafer creation! I'd love see that in person. He really knows what the heck he's doing.
There was a nice article about him last year in Craftsmanship Quarterly, it had a couple of pics of a 14-string guitar he was building that looked a lot like that one. It had the carbon fiber legs and rods, cool Blanton-esque adjustable bell cranks. The level of precision and detail are absolutely amazing. It looked like a 14 string Ferrari.

Yow, yet another approach to universality.
Looks to me like any serious C6 dude could jump on this and wail with hardly a hiccup, and not too much missing on the country side. I need to study this copedent closely.
I really dig that the skinniest string is a .013.
It will be interesting to see the placement of the second vertical knee and how it works out in the heat of battle. Olli Haavisto uses a second LKV too, but you don't see it often, and I can't recall seeing the subject discussed here.
Oh yeah, looks kinda purty, too. _________________ Excel Superb U12, MIJ Squier tele, modified Deluxe Reverb RI, Cube 80XL, self built acoustics & mandolins |

Actually, I've been gaining weight over the past year. But the guitar is lighter than the one I'm playing now. รขโขยช She's So Heavy... รขโขยช

The idea is to use one or the other. The first one is for E9th-like playing (C pedal stuff), and the second one is for D6th, where I feel the need for it occasionally. The lever that's not in use for a certain song will be pulled down to an unreachable position, to the right of LKR. Basically, if a song uses jazz chords, I will pull LKV down and move LKV2 up into the active position. It seemed like the simplest solution. _________________ -๐๐๐- (admin) - Robert P. Ah, yes. Good idea. And I see the old AF position is still there on P1 plus LKL where a trad Emmons setup has it.
If there was a quick way to disable the lower octave changes (shown in brackets) on LKV2 and RKL, I can see a very capable tuning for complex chord voicings. One could just back them off at the endplate, I suppose.
Almost all of Big E's 5&4 C6 is there then.
Watching with bated breath for further developments....

I've actually become quite good at using a bar slant to get the 7th string (D-C#) lower, but I thought it would be a good idea to have it rodded up for those all-E9 gigs. I'm not sure if I need the 8th string (B-Bb) lower at all. I want it there to try it out.
I think of the copedent as a full C6th with the E9th basics added. It won't work for Paul Franklin's modern licks, but it handles traditional country pretty well. Folk-rock and Americana are very popular around here, plus people get real excited when they hear that western swing sound. This approach works for me. Your mileage may vary. _________________ -๐๐๐- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Hi Bob,
Makes for a good mix of the 9th and 6th tuning on a 10 string.
I've fooled around a few years ago with a very similar tuning.
Looks like one of the vertical knees gives to the third E9th pedal change with your two main 9th style pedals.
The other 4 pedals are really standard 6th pedal changes so you should be able to get the best of both worlds.
Heres wishing you a wonderful time playing the new PSG when you get her. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

I got to hear that guitar yesterday. It sounds the best out of the three prototypes.
Congrats b0b. I'm jealous!

I liked it best of the three, too, Dave. I'm switching to a Telonics humbucker pickup, though. Tired of the single coil hum of the Truetone in my Desert Rose. _________________ -๐๐๐- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Not for me to say, Charley. He's been in "prototype mode" for the past few years - each guitar has taken a very long time to build and is unique. I'm sure that, if he goes into actual production, it will be announced here on the Steel Guitar Forum.
Also, be aware that this guitar cost me a small fortune (can't disclose details) and I waited over a year for it. I figure it will be my last pedal steel, so it's worth it. _________________ -๐๐๐- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

It looks like on the bellcranks, you can adjust them for the leverage you want by the screw on top.
There was another guitar made like that some years ago but I forget the name. |

Thanks so much for the compliments and interest y'all.
Yes, they will be available, they will be spendy and more info will soon be revealed.
In the meantime here's a pic showing the bell cranks for ya.
