Hello All, news regarding Ray Montee in Portland, Or.
The reason I'm posting is that I thought Ray may be know on this forum.
Ray's wife Sally contacted me today to tell me Ray is now in hospice care.
If he had friends on the forum, I'm sure he would love to hear from you. I will post the name and address of the facility as soon as I find out. |

I echo the previous comments and sorry about Ray's situation. Ray's post were very informative and he kept Jerry Byrds music alive!

Best wishes to Ray. The first time I met him was when I was invited by George Keoki Lake to participate in a couple of steel guitar round robin tapes, 6" reels-not cassettes, back many years ago. A good friend ever since. Best wishes Ray.

Ray definitely has friends here, as he's a friend of the Forum. He's a storehouse of knowledge and experience.
I like the picture you paint, Chris. Ray sounds good in that setting.

I only had one contact with Ray by PM. I asked his opinion regarding the tone of one of my steels used in a video recording. He responded promptly, and in great detail. He was certainly courteous to an unknown like me. He ended his reply with the above quote.

Ray was THE first person I PM'd when I first joined the forum, with a question about the great JB.
I'd like to echo & agree with all Mr.C.E. Jackson said.
Ray promptly & authoritatively dealt with my question & made me feel very welcome here.

Ray has been such a lifelong devotee of Jerry Byrd and created and maintains the Jerry Byrd Fan Club website at http://jerrybyrd-fanclub.com/ I think it would give him great comfort at this time to know that someone would carry on this work into the future. Any other big Byrd fans willing to take it over? If so, I suggest acting quickly (since Ray is in hospice) and so he can appreciate that it will happen (and maybe provide the password or whatever's needed for the transition).

Ray gave me some solid advice on technique (and some unblinkingly honest criticism!) when I was getting started on lap steel. I'm still guided by the things he told me. He was also very gracious when we met at the St. Louis convention in 2012. He's done a lot of good for steel guitarists everywhere; we all have the advantage of hearing and seeing his fine playing on YouTube and other internet venues. Plus he gave us the gift of the JERRY BYRD Fan Club website! (Bold and italics as Ray would have had them.) Godspeed, Skipper!

I agree 100%...never had the priviledge of meeting Ray in person, but he has a lot of experience and passion for the instrument and music !

I purchased Ray's former D8 Rickenbacker last year and emailed him to ask him a few questions. He promptly replied with lots of great information about the guitar and it's history. We emailed back and forth for a time, and I found him to be a really nice guy willing to share his experience and knowledge freely. I wish him all the best.
