| I can confirm what you know about his setup but can't add much at all. I did visit him at a club in Dallas in summer 1974. I think I got there too late to hear the band but he did spend some time showing me the tuning. It was very re-entrant of course; in other words all the outside strings were pitched somewhere in the middle of the E A D G B E, and he was experimenting with various notes there. He demonstrated the tuning by playing Freedom Jazz Dance at a ridiculous tempo, not using the pedals at all. Since he didn't use the pedals I have no recollection of how they were set up. I would have one that lowers D to C#, but then I would never use that tuning. |

I used to sub for Tom at the Belle Starr in Dallas when he was out with Ray Price. He was playing a double 12 MSA with that tuning on top and Bflat 6 on the bottom. He had 4 pedals on it and 5 knees. One of the knees pulled the G string to an A and he would hold it in when he was playing E9 style. I assume he raised it to an A with a pedal also. He would have also have raised the B a whole tone because he definitely had the equivalent of the A and B pedals.
That is all I am sure about. He got a lot of very complex voicings out of that thing! I would also like to get the rest of the setup. |

| I need to correct my post the knee lever raised the G to a G# not an A. that would give him an E7 based tuning on the middle strings with the knee engaged. |

| If you raised the A to a B, you'd get a nice big 6 string min7th chord. If I was using that tuning, it's something I'd want. |
