Who played steel on Connie Smith's I'll Come Running? Heard it this morning and it was some really cool playing.

Connie uses that song when auditioning for a new steel player. However, now, why would she be looking for another one. (not saying that she is)

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but as the story goes, the little chicken picking runs in the song I'll Come Running, were warm up exercises that Weldon did before a performance. Connie later on wrote the words to fit in and around Weldon's picking exercise.

Two different steel guitar things have haunted me for all of my life.
#1 Into Weldon did on "I'll Come Runnin"
#2 Ride Dicky Overby did on Johnny Bush's "I'll Be There".
If you can play these two things consider yourself lucky. I know how to play these two things, but still can't play them correctly. It still bothers me every time I think about it. I want to play them and still can't.

I love Connie Smith. A real Country singer! What other artist would build a song around a steel guitar? I've tried recording what Weldon played here and can chicken pick and block that fast okay but it sounds like it has a speech impediment. It's hard to make it spew out like machine gun fire in perfect time without losing a fraction of the beat. You can tell Weldon did his homework before he got around to recording this. Gary Carter comes about as close as any I have heard.

Gary does a good job but Wimpy nailed on Nashville now back in the 80's.

I believe I read that those licks were a practice exercise Weldon had worked up and he found a place to apply them in a session.

Henry I saw that video of Larry Sasser backing Connie Smith and yes he did nail it! Someone posted it last year and I've been searching YouTube ever since to hear it again and can not find it. I've searched "Connie Smith, Grand Ole Opry" and went through 50 pages one night and could not find it. I know it exist because I saw it. I would really like to see it again if anyone could provide the link.

He's got the licks down but only about half as fast and half as clean as Weldon's recording but most everyone else pales in comparison too so no biggy.
Weldon in his prime was a monster picker.

Weldon (my biggest hero alongside Lloyd) is fantastic on "I'll come running", but check out John Hughey's instrumental version from circa 1976. Mind blowing stuff, way better!

Wow! I can't imagine playing that fast and that clean.

It's even harder to imagine doing it 'under the gun' with the red light on.

Lloyd is super-human.
