Does anyone prefer a 20 wound over a 20 or 22 plain on the 6th string on E9, I have three guitars, a D10 MSA classic, Emmons SD10 p/p and a SHO~BUD LDG SD10. The 20 wound seems to sound better to me, I just wondered if anyone else uses this. Maybe its just personal preference. Anyone. JIM GOINS Oh Well

A wound sixth string is easier to tune and more stable regarding tuning (less affected by temperature changes), and the pedal travel more closely matches the travel of the third string than what you get with a plain sixth. But a wound sixth string can present problems if you want to lower that string a whole tone with a knee lever. Some people can make that change work and some can't get enough travel to make the change.

I use a plain sixth because I prefer the tone of a plain sixth.

If you prefer the tone of a wound sixth and are not trying to lower the sixth a whole tone, then by all means keep using a wound sixth.

In all the times this topic has arisen that is probably the best summimg-up I've read.

I have a wound on my Sho-Bud and the guitar sounds the best to me with a wound sixth. The rest of my guitars have a plain sixth and I like them that way. I guess it's what you like.

Wound 0.22 and a full tone lower with split with B pedal - all achievable with a Ben-Rom.
Nice one, Bent! You da man!!

Ironically, when I built my guitar I made sure there was enough travel to lower a wound string a whole tone, but then I decided I didn't like it and now I use a plain!

I do like the tone of the wound.
I do lower it a whole tone, but it DOES take a long lever throw.
