How Do You Play This Fill in 'Old Habits'?

I'm conflicted about the second part of the fill, where he does the B,A,G,A,B phrase before the final two chords.

I can do it working the B and C pedals and going between frets 5 and 3, but it almost sounds like he's doing something different there. I may be over complicating it.

I love Dicky Overbey, I got to see him at the Fulton Oysterfest with Mona McCall a few years back. Just the Emmons into the volume pedal into the amp, sounded amazing!

Try strings 5 and 8,with your A pedal...he probably used the E lower too...

When I listen to it with headphones, it seems like I can hear a B-D-B below the G-A-B. I'm not sure if that's coming from the steel, but if it is, that doesn't work with the B+C pedals lick.
I had tried it with the E lower in the 8th fret, then slide up to the 10th while letting off the E lower, then add the B. It's an awkward move for me, that's why I thought there must be a better way.
I think that's likely what he's doing, I just need to get used to it, I guess.

I think I may have it worked out, need somebody more experienced than me to try it and see if I'm on the right track.

So, the five note phrase in question: The top notes are B-A-G-A-B, then the final two chords, which I believe are D to A, 15th fret to 12th

The first two notes are just a B pedal letoff on the 5th string in the 10th fret, then the tricky part comes. The bottom notes below the G-A-B notes are B-D-B

Hit the E lower, strike 8 and 5 in the 8th fret that gives you your B and G notes

Letting the notes ring, slide up two frets while releasing the E lower, that gives you the D and A notes

Then slide back down 2 frets, letting the low note ring while engaging the E lower again, then strike the 4th string, this gives you the B and B notes.

Then slide up for the final two chords.

It's pretty hard for me to do all that and keep the knee in sync. I probably have it all wrong and making it more complicated than it needs to be. Either that, or more likely, I'm just clumsy.
Probably not a lick that I would try to incorporate into my playing.

That's the way I started out doing it, Tucker, but I'm not sure that last note is right on the 5th string, because he slides that note all the way up to an F#, here's my thinking:

It sounds like he hits the final B note on the 4th with the E lowered, and slides that all the way up to 15 still lowered, then slides that down to 12 while releasing the E lower and adding the B pedal.
On the first three notes I'm hearing that sliding B-D-B under it all and it's all just one picked note, as near as I can tell.

I got to considering that if a guy had an E raise on his 8th string on his C pedal he could do that little phrase without all the sliding up and down...

Is that a common thing to have an 8 raise on your C pedal?

I'm slowing this way down in Garageband so I can hear all the little nuances and that move seems a little too precise to be slides.

I was just looking at the copedent page and I see that Paul Franklin has that 8 string raise to F# on his C pedal, but most of them either don't have a low string raise or do the 10 raise to C#.
My guitar doesn't have any low string raise on the C pedal, just 4 and 5.

Steve Hinson is on the right track. I've played that song with many bands over the years and the whole phrase is played using the 5&8,lowering the E's and using the A pedal.

Well, that certainly is a lot easier and more natural than all that extra E levering I was doing. Smile

Do it with the bar: starting from that 10th fret A-pedal position, try sliding up to fret 19 (with no A-pedal), then slide back to fret 17.
