Lovely touch, Rick. That guitar looks like a work of art!
I don't buy the notion of possibly getting in the bass player's way, not with Ext E9. Maybe on the C neck but not with this set up.
You have some very interesting pulls on there - much enjoyed. And, of course, I know we all wish you nothing but the best with your ongoing treatment.

I love the "surprise myself" comment. That's when it gets really fun!
This extended E9 setup makes so much sense the way you've explained and played it, that it makes me wonder why it's not more commonly used. But then again, not many people think like you do! |

First, good luck with your cancer treatment. I speak for many when I say I hope you recover completely.
I play a U-12, so my E string is the 11th rather than the 2th string. I also lower it to C#. I's a great change. I like that your C pedal raises the 8th string to F#. I may put that on my guitars.
I think that the extra 2 strings on a 12 string offer a lot of possibilities not found on a 10 string. When I sit down at a 10 string I feel haldf the guitar is missing.

I hope those of y'all who haven't heard Rick play a set on his guitar, and sing as beautifully and with as much communication as his very expressive steel playing, will get a chance to one day. He really is a special performer, IMHO.

| In Dec. 2015 I put my S10 away and started on a S12U. I have never got to the B6 part of the guitar yet. With the 11th string E and 10 G# and 9th string B with D on LKL. It has kept me in stiches trying to figure out all the grips I can use with these added strings. This also give the guitar 2 low droan strings to add in certain licks. This thing is bending my mind again. |

I'm a fan of Rick Schmidt's steel playing. I know we're talking extended E-9th here - but check out his C-6th intro and ending to "Body & Soul." (The arrangement and jazz steel tone is great)

Here you go Bill. This chart is from my D12/11 Dekley, and I don't have a way on this computer to edit. Not the most current, but it's close. I never had a LKR on my Dekley...now I do on my new Infinity. On this chart, it calls my "Zero Pedal" #1.
So now on my new LKR, I raise strings 1 and 7 a half stop AND a whole step ( F#-G-G#), and string 2 a half step (D-E). I also now lower string 5 both a half and a whole step on my LKV. (B-Bb-A) "splitting up one half the "Franklin change". The other half, the 6 string G#-F# lower is now sharing pedal 5 with one pull on C6. I don't lower the 10th string because it gets in the way of other uses I have with my low strings and Zero Pedal.
I've never had such easily usable half stops before either .... the Infinity has very positive and in-tune half stops... the best I've had!

Here's a tuning I come up with looking at BMI's jet 10 tuning. Basically I eliminated my seventh and ninth strings. I also tune my second to D. A hold over from Jimmie Crawford lessons. I also eliminated my C pedal. I've not really found anything I can't get with the basic E9. Very little if any. I've gained much more. Here's a picture of my copedent

Rick, any chance you might have and could either post or send pictures of your D-12/11 Dekley to my Forum email address? I built a D-11 for Wally Murphy back in the day, but don't remember building a D-12/11.

Hi Jim... actually the only reason I had 11 strings on the C6 neck of my Dekley D12 was that I broke a tuner on the first string at a gig. Only after trying various ideas for that string.(a high A, and F, and a B.) After it broke, I never replaced it because it finally hit me how, once again, Buddy Emmons was truly brilliant to put the re-entrant D note on the string one position!
When Frank Carter was making the Infinity for me, he was against the idea of an D12/11 for aesthetic and many other reasons...so I had to figure out a new note I could live with. I picked an open B (per Reese's non pedal) in position 2. So now my top 4 strings on C6 are D,B,G, and E. The B in that spot is a real wild card that I'm finding a ton of uses for!
I was told when I got my Dekley, that it was originally owned by Bob White, but never got any proof of provenance. It has different fret boards than stock, with "quasars" as markers. I still love that guitar, but my back is loving me more now.
