No comments? This is not a joke! Perhaps they can find the active ingredient in MDMA that helps Tinnitus?

John, I have my doubts.. I personally think there is no cure at this time, and we'll be long gone before one is found..
I have simply learned to adjust to it... bob

Yeah Bob,
In May I'm going to see an ENT who specializes in tinnitus. I will report what she tells me. I'm sure she;ll be up to date on any studies, as she's highly recommended. As I mentioned, mine is louder than people speak, so it's a real handicap for me. Luckily, my amps go to 10!

I'd be interested in a cure or maybe just to lessen it. I've learned to live with it, but, sometimes, it's really, really annoying. My wife's getting tired of me saying "what"?

I went to the doctor for my tinnitus just a few days ago. This is what he told me to do, and wrote me a prescription for it.

Take one 25mg Claritin in the morning and one 25mg Benadryl at night. If that doesn't work in a few months, then I go to a ear, nose, and throat doctor for a scan of the areas on both sides of my neck.

Mark,
I tried that regimen. The only thing it did was keep my sinuses somewhat clear. I'm looking forward to seeing the specialist in lat May.

One big reason for not having a "cure" for tinnitus is that it's simply not a devastating disease... nobody is dying from it... and so the dollars for research simply aren't there in the numbers that heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, et al. can command.

We just got done driving about 1600ft of H-pile in the ground for our bridge project, 70 mph freight trains blasting horns and blowing by on the adjacent track, for three weeks. Just had my annual hearing test that the company provides/requires...they've informed me that I've lost about 40% of my hearing since I started 12 years ago...they wanted to know on the questionnaire, if I had ever been exposed around any loud noises..?
I predict hearing aids are in the very near future...I'm hearing something that isn't really there, when the day draws to an end and suspect Tinnitus. I've worn hearing protection faithfully throughout my career, but the damage is done...I'm 43. I'll be watching this and the other threads on this subject, as I too am interested if anyone finds any solution/treatment that works.

It's the number/percentage of people with a condition that drives medical research. The bigger the market , the larger the profit, the larger the investment in research by the biotech companies. If it's a chronic condition that will be managed by meds but not cured , that's even better for the pharmaceutical companies. If you're unfortunate enough to come down with a medical problem , you may be better off if it isn't a rare condition.

Conditions that aren't big ticket, sexy ones seem to be relegated to whatever patent medicine hasn't been tried.
It's a shotgun approach, trying whatever is available. Such treatments are symptomatic (how medicine is treated by and large}.

From the article:

"Whether MDMA is it or whether it's a trial for us to identify what is going on in the brain is still an open question."

I don't think it's an open question that it is a trial. The point does seem to remain that it's going on in the brain.

"In the past several years, studies have found that taking MDMA or ecstasy directly increases your stress levels....
Clinical trials in 2013 showed that there is a potential for MDMA to treat PTSD...."

This contradiction means to me that they don't know what they're doing with it, still trying. It could be that one man's poison is another one's medicine. It is my opinion that the condition is caused by stressors, and that symptomatic treatments don't do much in the long run.
I just keep listening. Animals around a lake in Africa do the same; I think they find it relaxing. Tune in what you'd tune out.

I've always wondered why most people make fun of you if you are hard of hearing but treat you with respect if you are blind or almost blind. Both are terrible handy caps. Very little research is done for the hearing impaired as compared to eyes and bad vision. Look how far they have come in last 50 years to treat eyes but nothing really different about your ears. Just hearing aids are a little better.
I've got quit a bit hearing loss in high frequency range but sometimes when I yawn, my hearing comes back for about a second. I'm sure they could duplicate that to restore your hearing if they would get off their butts and do it. Same thing for the constant ringing in your ears but nobody really cares because it is mostly older people and maybe they figure it's not worth it. My rant for the day, lol

Hell, I'll try it. If it's a dose lower enough that it doesn't get me stoned. Anything is better than this infernal ringing 24 hours a day

Quitting smoking helped A LOT as did cutting down on caffeine. Any stimulants for that matter. They say zinc and ginseng help but the jury is out on that. It certainly hasn't hurt but I've spoken to a lot of docs about this and they are stumped on tinnitus.

I believe that about caffeine and cigarettes, regrettably. I also like a fan, an old metal Emerson.

The mention of MDA made me do a little looking around, MDA vs. MDMA: Similar Drugs, Different Effects,
where you can find links to words such as 'psychedelic' and 'entactogenic' (or empathogenic).

The chemical difference is 'methylenedioxyamphetamine' vs. 'methylenedioxymethamphetamine.' They're still both meth.

A further link to MDMA (Mollies) says "As of 2017, MDMA has no accepted medical uses."

A possible side effect of both might be the "urge to hug and kiss people." It might be worth it if it helped tinnitus.
But I doubt it. I don't see meth as a good idea, but fortunately it's a free country.

There's truth in what Henry says. Maybe it's too common a problem.
There are no moving parts involved, no big money to be made on surgery, just big money to big pharma, still looking for ways to sell drugs.

Ain't that the truth. Anger response too. "Everyone else heard me. What's YOUR problem?" Duh...

The old Emerson brass blades make the best-sounding voices.

I am retired from radiology.
That means nothing except I remember constantly being bombarded by "I heard it on the internet".
If anyone has a genuine concern about any medical problem they have; ask your doctor.
Just stop searching on the internet.......please.
Remember, I am not a doctor, but I play one one the internet.
