Hello on my E9 neck the E string 4th down from the top continues to ring out a very annoying over tone while playing. I changed the string and I get the same thing. Any suggestions. It's almost unplayable. I'm using a Regular D"Addario 14 guitar string not a steel guitar string, is that the issue? Never had this before.
Thanks, Chuck

Check the top radius of the Finger for burs or a groove. Does it do it when it's played open?

If the pickup is on up there in years,it could possibly be microphonic. I had the same issue you're having and it was the pickup.

I have never figured out why most of my steels develop a sitar effect (groove in the the changer surface) on the 4th string and not other string.

I've been using a .015; as a little heavier gauge has been vibrating more solidly on the finger.

If the sitar effect is more pronounced with the F lever, your 4th string may have developed a slight bend from using the C pedal. The F lever places that C pedal bend right at the apex of the changer.

Thanks to all who replied, this is great information. In my process of elimination I'm leaning towards strings and p/u.
Can I still get a new E9 p\u for a Sierra Crown Gearless, D-10. Thanks so much guy's Chuck

I don't have good luck with D' OR Ernie strings; they are often rusty out of the package, and they go dead in about half the time as GHS or SIT. And often the guages are wrong (yes; I've used a micrometer on them.)
Try GHS pedal guitar boomers.

You should also check the roller. It may have some play, a drop of heavy oil might help.

I didn't see that anyone asked: Does it do it acoustically/unamplified? If so, it's not the pickup.

Does it do it for the open string, or the C pedal, or the F lever, or the Eb lever, or all of the above?

Two other things that it *might* be:
1) The angle of the string from the tuner to the nut.
2) A groove in the roller bridge. FWIW, I recently had a similar problem with this on the B string of a Strat. A little TLC and some "polishing" with some very fine sandpaper, and the problems seems to have gone away.

If/when you get it figured out, please let us know what it was.

Move the string on the finger and see if it still does it. Mine get that way after a while and I just have to polish the changer till I can't see the groove anymore. Usually have to do it about once a year.
