I just picked up a JBL D140F speaker to put in an old 1973 Fender VibraSonic Reverb amp I just bought.
That is the speaker that Fender originally put in that amp.
The Vibrasonic is basically a Twin Reverb with a 15" speaker. |

I think you mean Vibrosonic. I think they came with either a Cerwin Vega or a D-130F. The D-140F is a bass speaker.
The Vibrasonic was an early sixties amp with about 45 Watts. |

There is a difference between a Vibrosonic amp and a Vibrasonic amp.
The amp I have is a Vibrasonic reverb amp and it was made by fender in the 70's.
To add to the confusion, they recently issued a Vibrosonic amp that has one channel marked steel.
A fellow steeler had one of these for sale but we couldn't get together on the shipping end.
The Vibrasonic Reverb amp I have came out with the JBL 140F speaker made for Fender and it has the orange frame. It also calls for an 8 ohm speaker.
Check it out. |

The VibrOsonic was made from '72-'81. From '74 to '79 the D-130 was the stock speaker. Fender never put a D-140 in a guitar amp.
They recently reissued a VibrAsonic with a "Steel" channel.
Like watching your "P's and Q's", when it comes to Fender amps you need to watch your "A's and O's". |

EVM 15L, EVM 15B, Altec 418B, JBL K-130, Peavey 1501-4, or Telonics 15" would do a great job for you.

Here is a 78 twin I had split cabs built for by Rick Johnson. I put a 15in black widow in it and it sounds fantastic. If you havnt considered this It makes it a lot easier to haul around also.

The "Custom VibrAsonic" was made in 95 & 96. it had the blackface look, and took a 4 ohm speaker.
The VibrOsonic was a silverface, starting in the mid 70s and took an 8 ohm speaker.
Check the Fender amp field guide from the mojo site, it states all the details being discussed here.
The "Custom VibrAsonic was made in the USA , and had the same Emminince speaker later used in the steelking.
Ive owned both. Both were great amps. |

I put my JBL K 130 in my twin, but I thought it was 'bright' for my taste. I put in a Sica Bass Lite 15", and I like it in there. The JBL had about 20 hrs. on it, so I figured it was 'broke in', but I like the Sica a little better... |

That's the reason that a D140 can be a better sounding speaker for pedal steel. The D140 is not just a bass speaker. It was used for electric organs. |

Steve,
I agree, that's the same reason a lot of steel players play through bass amps.
After all the above conversation, I took another look at my amp and it is a Vibrosonic Reverb from 1973, sorry about the confusion, it's heck to get old. |

It was a moving target, Erv. The original brown face Vibrasonic (40 watts, 1961-ish) was spelled with an A. |

I don't know that it's necessarily true that a 15 provides more bass than 2 12s. The 2x12 moves more air than a 1X15 and a 12 will usually have about the same frequency response as a 15 of the same make. For instance a Peavey 1502 bottoms out at 40 hz whereas the 1201 gets down to 45 hz - barely perceptible if at all.
I really liked the JBL D130F that was in my Twin Reverb for years but the Altec 418B that I have now is something special. Yes it provides a nice full bass but the magic is in the velvety smooth top end - it's eargasmic! Not as light as a neo but at only 15 lbs it's lighter than two 12s and most 15s.

Ken,
You are right, it's easy to get confused! |
