Back in the late 80s, I was at a steel convention in Armonk, NY where I was talking to Buddy. I asked him how many steel players did he think there were in the USA. His answer surprised me. My guess was a few hundred, and he said there were something like 15,000 just in the USA alone. Maybe because of the internet, it seems like that number nowadays is way underrated.
Is there any way to find out how many steelers there are in the USA? How about the entire world? By steel players, I mean everyone who owns a steel & includes students as well as pros. _________________ A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag. |

When you were in Armonk, back then, we had over 1,500 in the PSGA alone. Some of them were from overseas, mostly Europe and some from South Africa and the Far East.
And, we were only just a part of the steel world. There were many other clubs across the USA, too. |

My guess: .000001% as many as the number of dj's (whatever it is that they allegedly do). |

Another question. How many will there be in 30 years? That's the one we need to focus on. |

I agree 100%...I have been wanting to move to the Austin area for years, but there are way too many players there. Here at least I am one of the few, so I get a good share of the work. But, on the other hand, if I lived in Austin, there are so many great players I could go out to see on my off nights, which I'm sure would be plenty!
In Florida I am a whale in a bathtub. In Austin, I'd be a minnow in the Pacific! _________________ A couple D-10s,some vintage guitars & amps, & lotsa junk in the gig bag. |
