Aloha, new member here.
Want to give a shout out to members -
Gerry Nieto for putting together the sale of his vintage Oahu Tonemaster and shipping it in great shape and then refunding me 20 bucks afterwards to adjust the cost of shipping. The steel is a beast, something a pro could use their whole career.
And to Doug Beaumier for selling and expediting to me his study lessons. There are a couple or three songs in each book I will be using and that makes them all worthwhile (I’m strictly a beginner). His youtubes got me to want an 8 string so one more big mahalo to,
Bob Allen, for his expertise in creating a new axe that I can’t wait to receive after a few weeks. Bob agreed to send interval pictures during the process so, being a woodcrafter myself, I could take in the building experience.

Welcome, Tod, from Canada's south Pacific - Vancouver Island. You can't go wrong starting with two very inspiring instruments, along with Doug's material. And this forum is a wealth of shared learning from very generous players.

No, but funny you should ask.
I have a story to tell about Pat's at Punalu'u which was a restaurant in Hau'ula, named after the town next door. I'm about to post it in this Steel Without Pedals section.

Aloha! If you are learning on Maui, Joel Katz teaches a Hawaiian Steel Guitar class at UH-Maui--it's cheap and fun, and there are only a few students who take it (I'm in it now and the most students have ever showed up to a class are 3). You may even be able to come still this semester--you'd have to ask Joel. And there is also the Maui steel guitar camp and festival in April in Napili. Both are worth google-ing. Welcome to the forum!

Aloha Loren and Bill. I've read up on Joel Katz and have listened to some of his steel songs. He's great. Would love to take the class but traffic is so bad traveling from the west side these days.
I won't be missing the Steel fest this year. I've been a to a few of them. Tiki Bar is my usual hang out spot and I know half the staff. Met Patty Maxine last time. I hope Pomaika'i Lyman is there again, granddaughter of Auntie Genoa. It's always a pleasure to watch Alan Akaka, Bobby Ingano and the other rippers.
I studied a little with Henry Allen in Napili. They called me later and told me I'm now part of the family and can have free lessons anytime I want. He really wants to pass along the old and correct style of playing Hawaiian.
Thanks for the welcome, my best friend lives in Kihei, bound to run into you sometime. Maybe at the fest. |

I sure love hearing about Hawaiian guitar...uh, steel guitar....in Hawai'i.
It's like when I hear about traditional New Orleans jazz, like the brass bands, still being a living, flourishing tradition in my home town. |
