Ron, I've never worked on a Zum that old. I'm going to guess that was Bruce's first attempt at lower return compensators.

The other pic? I'm guessing doubling up on helpers. What do they attach to on the other end?

Lane, in the place of spacer washers on the changer are little blades that extend down and are pulled up against the wood body. Sort of Carters body contact technology before Carter. In my opinion it works, These are great sounding guitars. The screws in the photo are return compensaters. I guess the jury is still out on whether they worked. The guitar I worked on returned fine without them. I just backed them off until the little compression spring didn't contact the finger.
