Just received an e-mail from Honolulu:
"You cannot believe how bad it is...overnight hotel occupancy at the (****) Hotel dropped to 26%. Down the beach at the (****) Hotel it was 14%. 18% at the (****) Hotel and so on. Rooms (entertainment) closed all over town. Entire guest room floors closed also. People are being laid off right and left. Entertainers being let go. The famous (****) Room closes as of tonight. Duo acts were told that one of them could stay as a solo act with a dancer. It's tough all over. No one on the beach, no one on Kalakaua Avenue; all the big shows and major lu'aus are cancelled....it's all very bleak over here in Waikiki"

I purposely left out the names of the hotels, but suffice to know, all were major hotels in Waikiki.

The Honolulu Star Bulletin has more information on layoffs and how this crisis has affected the tourist industry in Hawaii. We're certainly seeing it here in San Francisco as well.
Unfortunately this doesn't really apply to lap steel, so I'll move this discussion to the Events/Announcements forum.
