For those who have owned, or at the very least played through, both of these classic models of Peavey steel guitar amps, which amp sounds the best to you, and why. |

The LTD. Warmer, fatter, rounder sound. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
More amps than guitars, and not many effects |

I have played lots of different amps and for my personal taste, the Peavey LTD can't be beat, stock amps are great and modded even greater. I also use the sica lite speaker in the two I have which I think makes them even better and a lot lighter. The nice thing is you can usually pick one up for around $350. _________________ Henry Matthews

I bought an LTD with the BW somewhere around 80,81. Played it until 1990 when I traded it for a NV400. To tell the truth, I couldn't tell a helluva a lot of difference after setting the EQ.
I later had John Lemay mod the NV400 and it's been a keeper and a real workhorse since the early 90's. |

I hate Randy (not really)
He has by far the best sounding original LTD 400 I have ever heard or played thru and he won't sell it to me ! _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

Poll is a little unfair....many different "mods" to consider......there's the factory NV400 mod, which changes the tone stack voicing but only marginally improves the opamps. Then there's the Fox NV400 mod, which makes a big opamp improvement ONLY. Then there's the Fox NV400 Intense Mod, which combines both of the above, along with a big reverb circuitry improvement. And the Sarno LTD400 Mod! _________________ Emmons & Peavey |

The factory modded NV400 wins for me. I had a factory modded NV400 and also a reissued Session 400 LTD. I couldn't find the right EQ on the LTD and eventually sold it (at a big loss as it was hard to sell at the time). |

I've had all three and my Fox Intense Mod silver cornered Nashville 400 with a Deltalite speaker is the keeper! |

Never played an LTD but I just replaced the Black Widow speaker of my Le May mod NV400 with a JBL D140R and the amp *really* came to life.
In comparison, the BW speaker just sounds barky, unmusical and uneven with lots of strident mids. The R variant of the JBL was used in organs and is suitable even for bass players. The speaker is surely the defining element in the chain. |

Which Black Widow did it have? The 1501-4SB paper cone basket sounded really close to the JBL to my ear....
I have a couple LTDs that Brad Sarno went through. They both have Peavey 1501-4SB with the Neo Magnet. I like them better than the Nashville 400s I've had |

I think the amp was built in the early or mid 90's. The only designation I see is on the speaker cone: 1601001B or 7601001B. |

I think the Session/LTD 400 has a lot more 'tubey' sound, and I attribute at least part of that to the fact that they are discrete amps, no op-amps. I've owned Nashville 400's, the LTD, and I still own two Session 400s.
But everybody has their own set of ears, and I played through a Nashville w/factory mod for quite a few years. It was certainly a serviceable amp. |

LTD 400, because:
(a) I have one.
(b) circuit uses discreet components (no op-amps). I can maintain and mod it myself for the cost of the parts (capacitors and resistors).
Both are hefty amps. Mine has an EVM/15L, it's heavy, but same can be said for the BW/15.
I have played through a friend's NV400 (BW15), and prefer the sound of his amp, but I'm just getting started on the mods. If results are good then I'll consider a new neo-mag speaker (maybe SICA). |
