Hi steelers,
I'm thinking very seriously about having a new guitar made.
Seems the Mullens are very well respected, as well as some others too.
Not a surprise to me as I had one of his very early ones with the rack & barrel pull system that was built far better than the Sho Buds of that kind. That was years ago now.
Anyway, I'm studying the Mullen web site and not able to find the difference between the Royal Precision and G2. If there is anybody who knows the answer to this please let me know? I know about the almost thousand bucks, but what does that get?
I am also wanting to know the weight of the Mullen SD-10 model with 4&5 in a simple case?
Yup, it that old bad back thing.
Can write to the company, but would like some input from some of you who have one of these first. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

Hi Lane,
Bent cross shafts are worth a thousand bucks?
Is that the only difference?
Best wishes,

Mike Mantey has chimed in before. The changer is different, it has a different voice, especially higher up the neck. If you go hunting a bit, the two have been compared and contrasted often. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I own a G2 and a Discovery. I have spent a lot of time playing an RP and I can tell you that Mullen Guitar and Mike Mantey are top notch. The RP has what I would describe as a more mellow tone and the G2 and discovery sound a little brighter. All three models are made to perfection. The Mullen Crew is top notch. Hope this helps.

If yours in 54 pounds in the case then I'd guess with aluminum legs it would be under 50 and good for flying?
Is yours 3&4 or 5 or 4&5?
I'm wanting a 4&5 SD-10 if the weight will work.
I fly overseas often and if over 50 pounds they charge a lot to carry it. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

The Mullen Discovery is the flight model. I think it is 46 lbs in the case. |

The single necks are not really what I like.
Really do like the SD-10 for the placement of the knee levers.
My re-built SD-10 Sho Bud with 5&4 plus aluminum legs comes in at 49.5 pounds, but that old rack and barrel system is just not up to the standards today as far as the action goes.
Thanks Craig. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

I own a 2003 RP D10 9 x 9 and a lacquer 2009 G2 SD10 5 x 5. I'm happy playing both steels. And great service from Mike Mantay!
If it's a cost factor then go with whichever you can afford. |

Hi Rocky,
Not so much the money though thats always part of it.
But have some ideas of some custom work as well as the weight.
I'm leaning towards the Royal Precision because I don't see that the G2 would be a thousand dollars with of difference.
Thanks for your input.

Maybe time to send Mike an e-mail and let him know what I want.
See what they can do for me and if the weight can be kept below 50 pounds with a SD-10 and 4&5? _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

I talked with Gary Sill (Mullen player and dealer) at the Phoenix show and played both an RP and a G2. Both were smooth as silk, and the G2 was slightly, but perceptibly, smoother.
According to Gary, the changer fingers on the RP are rotating on an axle in the standard manner, while the G2 rotation is assisted by roller bearings. In addition to the different crossbars, there are other changes made which he didn't elaborate upon. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.
Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Posted 19 Jan 2017 10:17 pm Looks like a Mullen
|

Well thanks to all for your input.
Looks like a Mullen Royal Precision will take care of my needs.
I sent them a list of the strange things I had in mind. Style, weight and more....
They got back quickly with a positive response and a price quote.
I've let them know I'm good at that quote and since our time zone here is backwards to the USA will have to wait for their response and payment information.
Eleven years now since my last new steel so I feel due.
I'll be back in the states in March when it should be ready so now just the waiting. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles. SD-10 4+5 in E9th; http://luthiersupply.com/instrument-gallery.html

I sold a Mullen, and I really regret it. It was a 2005 or so D-10 RP, black and polished. 8+6.
I've personally met Mike at a show. The whole crew at Mullen is great and will take care of you, guaranteed.
You will love any Mullen you get. Me? I've got my eye out for a G2...maybe one will find me. Red please! |

No, Mike, it was 8&7! But you're right, it was a great guitar, and I kind of wish I still had it. Guess I'll have to make do with my G2.
That guitar currently resides in Astoria, OR, and I believe remains much loved by the current curator. |

Posted 20 Jan 2017 5:51 pm My Order for the Mullen
|
|
My Order for the Mullen RP will be an SD-10 with 4&5, that seems to be getting to be a standard these days.
Will have the full polish job as I hope this will last until I take up the 10 string harp for the management...
Instead of formica it will be covered in polished aluminum so the entire guitar will look like polished steel... The idea being to blind people to my very average playing style.
I also only wanted the armrest pad to only cover the right side since I don't rest my left arm when I play. Also want to see as much of the shine as possible.
The only thing I would have liked was to have the older style fretboard that was black and silver, but they no longer have those so will have to be the colored one unless someone knows where I could find one of those old ones to send them?
Will have aluminum legs and a special light case to keep it below 50 pounds for traveling which I do a lot. The airlines can really put it too you on heaven cases.
The vertical knee will have the extender because I find it kind of hard using that lever on my other guitars when I have the pedals depressed.
Anyway, I am very excited about this and feel like they are good people to deal with. Seems they get nothing but good things said about them. That is not to exclude the many other good builders we have to choose from these days.
Once again, thanks to all for your input and ideas. It was very helpful in coming to a decision. Also thanks to Bob Lee for making this site available to us all, it's no small deal. _________________ Inlaid Star Guitar 2006 by Mark Giles.
