Lee me and Jim Lindsey tried to get a club going here in Louisiana, however, as trying to find a venue to hold a once a month meeting has fruitless. And there are a lot of talented steel players here in this state. in the baton Rouge area there are about 12 of us. I hate to say but the steel guitar is not as popular an instrument here. People's musical taste here go for Cajun, Swamp Pop, 1950 Doo Wop songs with horn arrangements added to them, and of Dixieland Jazz and Jazz.

I mean there is country around but a lot of the bands, try to keep the size of the band small. And sometimes it is the steel player who gets the axe. For reasons of the all mighty dollar.
Take the recent New Years Eve celebrations. A lot of the bars used small trio bands or Karaoke.

I am fortunate, I have a couple of gigs this weekend, in Louisiana.

It would be nice if there was a vfw post or retiremental center that was feasable.

Talked to a younger steel player when I visited the gulf port show.

My first gained exposure to steel guitar performance was at a club meeting. Didn't have pressure of messing up in front of a paid audience. Having all of them been steel players, they were forgiving. Everyone has to start somewhere.

It's hard to find a live country band/dance, in fact I haven't found one between New Orleans and Gulf Port.
Baton Rouge, Lafayette area seems to be the concentration.
It's a shame. Send like the clubs prefer karaoke, I guess so they can please everyone insted of a set group.
Miss Texas.

I've found that people "love" the sound of a steel guitar, even if they do not know that they are listening to it in the mix. I try to expose steel guitar by playing steel on a few songs, such as a Conway or George Jones song and switch over to guitar for the rest of the night. Most patrons do not know what a steel looks like, but most know the "sound" of the instrument. That's when they start asking questions about the instrument. A perfect time to enlighten them.

I agree with Mike. I play a theater type show once a month near Livingston, LA. which is all traditional country. I also work quite a bit with a local singer/musician, Clifton Brown who sings classic and traditional country music. We stay pretty busy in the Baton Rouge area and we play a lot of outdoor concerts. We played a concert venue not long ago in Baton Rouge and some of the younger musicians gathered up watching us with me playing the steel. It was interesting that many did not know what is was, but loved the sound. We are getting bookings and staying busy so maybe Country Music will come back around. Bill Stafford puts on a great show at Gulfport MS in November of each year, it is a really good one with lots of good people and players.
