This tune was a hit for the The Shadows back in 1963. I only recently discovered it. I thought it might work well on steel. The guitar is a 1970's Emmons 8-string lap steel. C6 tuning w/high G. Thanks for listening.

Thanks, Andy! Here's the original ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VycZVyApqew

I love the guitar tone on the original. Sounds like a Strat through a small tube amp. The Shadows were a UK band, so we didn't hear them much, if at all, in the USA back in the 60s. Here we had The Ventures. In recent years I've been discovering a lot of Shadows music and really digging it.

Remember this Shadow song from the -60, and you get it sound like a STRAT. You did it again.

Great stuff as usual Doug. Have you tried Hank's jazz tune Nivram? It will fit the same tuning.

Thanks for the kind comments. I haven't tried Nivram yet. I'd also like to try Wonderful Land sometime.

Just out of interest, Hank Marvin originally played his Strat through a Binson tape echo unit into a Vox AC30 tube amp.

I was wondering about that... where his reverb came from. In 1963 most amps didn't have reverb. I think Fender introduced onboard reverb in 1964. Of course, there were a lot of separate reverb units available in that era and tape delays. Also plate reverb was used in studios starting in the late 50's, I believe.

Most likely, plate reverb. Here's more than you wanted to

Nicely done Doug.
I bought my first Shadows record , "The Rise and Fall of Flingal Bunt" in '65 or so . They got some airplay up here in Canada. Still a fan , just started playing "Spring is Nearly Here" .
Always enjoy your renditions of the '60's guitar instrumentals.

Guys, I'm showing my ignorance but how does "plate reverb" differ from reverb? Growing up in Pittsburgh, we did hear The Shadows music as well as The Ventures. Though I did not play guitar until much later, I enjoyed the music of both groups. Stevet

Plate reverb was a huge piece of sheet metal mounted in a frame. I'm not sure of the technical details, but I think an audio signal was sent to the plate, causing it to vibrate (reverberate) and there were some kind of transducers or mics on the plate that would pick up the sound and send it to the recorder. They produced a very deep, full reverb, depending on how the dampers on the plate were set. I think plate reverbs are still being made today.

Doug, WOW, I did not think it was anything like a real plate as in the picture you posted. I guess they did not tot these around. Looks like someone began with an erector set and moved on from there. Pretty wild stuff. Thanks for enlightening me. Steve t

Yeah, a lot of digital reverb pedals have a "plate" setting, and I never knew exactly what that meant or where that term came from. Now I know.

Another good one Doug. You seem to be on the Shadows trip at the moment. These are the tunes I have been playing since the 60's. Yes Hank Marvin was my hero.

I did a couple on pedal steel (a different section I know) one of which was Wonderful Land

Hello Mike, I know The Shadows, but we have a group from Sweden, The Sputniks you maybe heard of them. That was my first guitar group, then Shadows and of cause The Ventures. I grow up of that type of music.

Mike, I enjoyed your recording of Wonderful Land. What a great melody that is! I used to have a Sho-Bud S-10 exactly like yours.

Thanks Doug. I always enjoy your vids which tempts the question - of all the single neck lap steels you have, which if any is your favourite?

Yes, Sputnicks and Ventures - remember them well. I may even still have a Sputnicks vinyl somewhere. Must have a look. Those years were the best for music - but then I would say that - my teenage years.

Mick, as far as my lap steels, my favorite 8-string is the Emmons. It has a lot of sustain and tone, probably due to the mahogany body, the huge metal nut and bridge, the strong pickup, and the 24 1/4" scale length (same as Emmons pedal steels). My favorite 6-string lap steel is my Gibson Century 6. I like the short scale and wide string spacing... it makes for easier bar slants. And the guitar really growls. Picking hard or softly produces different tones on that guitar, and I like that.
