David,
I must take some exception to some of the stones you are throwing at Wilcox. While it is true that Chet is not a prcision machinist, the guitars that are BUILT by Chet are not that bad actually. Chet is still building and selling guitars. The last time I talked to him he sent me pictures of improvements he has made to the mechanism to make the guitar operate more smoothley. If I could afford another I would buy one. At present, I believe that he charges about HALF of what the major manufacturers are charging. This was Chet's whole point,to build a guitar that was decent and don't cost four or five thousand dollars. In that,I think he has succeded.

I'm glad that you have an axe that you like, Dustin, one or two others have said similar things about their Wilcox guitars on the forum, but there are a LOT of folks on this forum and elsewhere who have felt robbed and have said so with great vehemence. When I had my RED PEDAL STEEL listed on eBay I recieved at least a dozen emails from people who had purchased Wilcox guitars and were extremely, shall we say, "excercised" about their situation.
Rather than casting stones I have tried to be as fair and honest as possible (yes, my comment about "a Wilcox tradition" may have been a bit facetious, but he DOES mount his tuners backwards on every guitar I've seen yet). If you read my posts carefully you will see that I have listed only specifics that are factual and have REPEATEDLY given Chet the benefit of the doubt, disassociating him from the activities of others who have at least the appearance of being scammers.
Not very long ago it was announced here on the forum that Chet wasn't going to build any more guitars and that he was selling his remaining parts stock to Dan Burnham. Any statements I have made about Chet no longer being in business are derived from this information. Still, "Survey Says" his best new guitars at $1500 - $2000 are still no match for an average used guitar from almost any other builder at the same price, either in performance or value.
No offense meant or taken, I am sincerely glad that you like your axe and if Chet's new work is a significant improvement we will all hear about it before long.
Peace -- dg |

David,
O.K., that's fair enough. I wish I could afford a new model, just to try out the updated mechanics. I will say that from the pictures I have seen, I think they are an improvement over the old style Wilcox, which is what I have. From my latest correspondance with Chet,he is always trying to make improvements to his guitars. I believe that he has built about fifty guitars.I just see the brilliance in what he is trying to accomplish.Chet does have awesome taste in pic-ups,as his stock choice is a Wallace tru-tone,which I love.As far as it being no match with the other brands...I dunno.A used sho bud D-10 is usually about $1500.00-$2300.00 . Throw in another 7-1100.00 for a re-finish and mechanical upgrade....that's a huge chunk of change for a person on my budget. I'm cheap...can't help it.If I wasn't going to buy a new Wilcox,I might buy a GFI. Why ? Low Price and a great product. In the end, tone is what I care about most, tone. I have to be happy with the sound.

I said I would report back on the guitar that started this thread, so here it is. First of all I am not the worlds leading authority on steel guitars nor am I one of the top players on the planet. I have however been playing multiple string instruments for 30+ years and I operate a guitar repair shop and build custom guitars. That said, at least in the case of this guitar, I think Mr. Wilcox may be getting a bum rap. While the fit and finish is definately not the quality of a factory guitar. It actually plays out pretty well. The pulls are smooth, and returns to pitch. The E66 pickups are good and clean. Everything appears to be lined up straight. The tuning machines are mounted correctly. My original intention when I bought it was to strip it down for parts. But I've decided to keep it as a backup axe. In my humble opinion $750.00 was a "steel" for this guitar. As for Don, I have had previous dealings with him through Ebay, he's allways been straight up with me. |

Proves the old adage, "one man's vinegar is another man's wine". Won't it always be this way in the human race? I sure hope so.

Thanks for the update, Rich, I've got no problem at all with being wrong when it's good news like that.
