Split tuning is a procedure that allows for one to adjust the note that results from simultaneously raising and lowering the same string to a note that is usable. A common example is raising the fifth string with the A pedal from a B to a C# and lowering it to a Bb with a knee lever. Typically the resulting note is a flat Bb and it needs to be raised up to a C note. Then the procedure of split tuning is employed by either of two different methods- one using a split tuning screw in the back of the changer where employed by the manufacturer or the addition of a separate rod that extends from a bellcrank on the lowering cross shaft to a raise hole in the changer of the string in question.

We just discussed this a few days ago. Be nice if we could make a sticky on this. http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=310662

Here's me combining/splitting a couple of modern changes

And splitting the B lowers and the A pedal (this can be simulated by half-pedaling the A pedal)
