Need to replace tuners on old National Special 8. Any suggestions on where to get tuners? Not really sure what to order. Any suggestions? |

The originals would have been Klusons. On an 8-string steel they probably would have used mandolin strip tuners. There are replicas out there. |

I pulled a tuner strip from my Magnatone S8, measured it, and compared it to the specs of the Kluson mando tuner web page. Seems like they will drop in to my guitar. Noah, or anyone have experience with the Kluson current mfg tuners in their vintage S8's?
Thanks

I do not have experience with the specific tuners mentioned. I so have a Framus Bali 8 string that had strip tuners installed. A couple of the buttons broke and replacing them was impossible. I bought a no-name Mandolin strip tuner set that seemed on comparison to fit. Once in the holes there was about a millimetre difference, enough to put stress on the parts. So I sawed each strip in half and this works fine. Far cheaper than buying 8 individual tuners!
Looks a little scruffy on the back but I rarely play steel with my teeth so I don't think anyone will notice.

I've used the new Klusons several times in the last few years for my own guitars or for customers (I do some guitar tech work) and they function very well.

What's wrong with 'em? If it's the altogether too common issue of disintegrating plastic buttons, it may be best in the sake of originality to simply replace the buttons. I have brought dozens of old Kluson Deluxes back to life simply by installing new plastic buttons. |

Do the new Klusons from WD compare favorably to the Kluson repros from Gotoh? In the rare instances where I've had to install brand new Kluson Deluxe-type tuners instead of refurbishing the originals, I have used Gotohs. They are superior to original Kluson Deluxes, in my opinion. |

You know what, you may be onto something. I just need buttons. Tuners work fine. They are disintegrating. Would save a lot of money and trouble just to replace buttons. Will look on stewmac or somewhere. Thanks! |

The new Klusons and the Gotohs are both fine as far as I'm concerned. Since you mention Gotoh, I can say that I've had good experiences using their tuners almost always. I say "almost" just to be safe!
I did not notice a great deal of difference in quality , both brands were quite good for the price point. |

I get mine at Stew-Mac. I have used their cream, white, and black plastic buttons with great results:

If the tuner machines work and you can get replacement buttons, that's a great way to go. Just make sure the screw machines work well. |

The Kluson mando tuners fit my Magnatone G-65-W8 perfectly and work much better than the originals. They are listed on reverb.com for $49.95 shipped. I offered $40 and got them $45.
