I stumbled upon a music shop on Kauai while vacationing with my wife. Cool little independent shop across from some little diner. I asked the shop owner about what steels he may have in inventory (didn't see any on the floor). He told me of course he had steel guitars but I should go look at the ukes - that those are good for "mainlanders." A-hole. We walked out.

Later on that trip we were on Maui, stumbled into a uke hut in Lahaina. Saw a cool little uke and thought about buying it until I noticed that the place appeared to be owned by the same guy. We walked out.

We've been to HI 3 times since our honeymoon in 2001. This was our 2nd trip. I do believe everybody else we encountered in HI - and I do mean EVERYBODY - was friendly.

Kaiaui is a great place for Hawaiian music. Lap Steel and Uke masters Vic & son Ed Punua live in Lihuie. When we were last there this past spring, Ed was playing out once a week with a great group. They're in the phone book so give them a call and they will clue you in to what's what on the music scene.

HSGA stalwart and master of the Uke & Mandolin, E.P. Davis lives in Hanalei way up on the north coast where there is a really great music shop as well.

The Kauai Steel Guitar Festival has been in Feb the past two years http://www.kauaisteelguitarfestival.com/. Hope they have it again this year.

Great place to listen, visit with the greats and sometimes pick up a tip or two.

February 3&4 are the dates for the event to be held at the Courtyard Marriot in waipouli which is between Wailua and Kapaa. Last years event was great. Should see most of the top performers there.

I'll be there, playing on Saturday.
