I have used the original PV Blue Marvel that was issued in the original Nashville 112, mine was about 2007... thought it was a stellar speaker... very clear and focussed with just the right amount of articulation. Seemed to lend a solid feel to picked notes.
There is also the newer Blue Marvel, Eminence EPS, Travis Toy, and perhaps others that fit the bill. Prefer spending less money...
How about a Cannibas Rex ? Cheap.
Amps I own that am specifically considering refitting are:
Peavey Heritage VTX 2x12 (hybrid w 4x6L6 output)... man this amp is great! Just tweaking away from the mid scooped stock Scorpions for better steel tone. The scorpions of course sound great with six string. .. both clean and gain. .. but do not have the focus and weight of the Blue Marvel.
Peavey Bandit 112 Transtube Chrome Stripe... I sure love the way the mids in the stock sheffields sit in a mix... very rich... but no low end and nearly untameable highs.
MusicMan RP 65-112 hybrid w/ Sylvania 2x6CA7 output)
The stock MM 65 has a pleasant chimey clean tone with six string... but absolutely sucks for steel with its stock MM speaker.
Have a friend selling a Peavey Special 130 for cheap.. but it would need to have something really special about it to put money into yet another amp. ...
If you have specific experience with any one of these amps and any specific speaker trials, please elaborate!

Heritage sounds like perfect setup. Tube hybrid for steel neat idea. Never had chance to play one though. I do have experience with Special 130. Special indeed. The para mids iswhat make it so. Plus the clean headroom. May distort a bit on C6 if you are in a loud room with loud band and no mics. It's a great Nash 112 type amp. Only thing is it's heavy. Really heavy. Small pakckage though and easier to manage than a 212. I really love mine. It's my backup amp for LTD400. I use it for when I have church gig and need to leave an amp there, then gig with LTD. I use a tube preamp in front for certain gigs, lap and non pedal console steel. How many watts is Heritage? Sounds like a neat amp. Special130 is a real handy amp to have around. Lots of old Nashville guys used to use them back in the day so I read. It's a killer amp. They have reputation for being monster in disguise. Loud as hell. And clean. So many cool old Peavey amps! There are some I haven't even seen. |

The Heritage is 120W. Two channels with independent eq... the first has a tonestack like a twin... the second has T,B, paramid... no presence control , but the internal presence is set just right.
I find this amp has a vibey tone and silky highs. The paramid control is good if set at 11 o clock and below but can have a honk above 11 oc.
Bought it for 100 bucks not working. 15 dollar fix. I heard a v
Tele player use one at a local dance and I had to own one..

Cannabis Rex is a great speaker and excellent at taking the shrillness out of amp. I have one in a Fender Blues Jr that has all of the BillM mods, including the change to 6v6 tubes.
Beware though that the CR is rated at 50W and so if you were playing to use it with your Heritage amp, you'd have to be real careful with the volume. |

Yes... a good discussion... thanks for the link.
I know speakers are discussed a lot and may seem a redundant thread. A speaker review without knowing the amp behind it doesn't always help... tonestack design and tonal influence of tubes can change tone and feel a lot.
but the speaker curves sure do help. In broad terms ... mostly in terms of bass and treble. It takes a more sophisticated ear than I have to know how the mid range bumps interact to find the midrange I want from a chart.
Since I liked the original Blue Marvel in the N112... does anyone know how the new Blue Marvel compares? Even the words better or worse could be useful. Never heard the new one. The old one was so very clear and focussed I almost concluded it could not be improved on at the time. .. except to say it tended to being a bit hard and cold rather than warm and rich... but often tone that sound s a little hard and cold works better in a mix.
If I could find the tonal purity of the BM but with the rich midrange of the Sheffiield... that would be a speaker for the ages.

I have a little Bandit 65 I want to put a nice light steel friendly speaker in. Key is light. I put a Delta Pro in it and it was heavier than a Nash 400! Thinking of trying out a neo or TT or something. Need a light grab and go smaller amp. |

I have the 12 inch EPS and Travis Toy speakers. They are great speakers but very different in tone so it depends what you are looking for. The Travis Toy is mor mid focused than the EPS.
If you come across a Peavey LA-400 grab it. The stock Black Widow speaker is great and the tone on this amp for steel is wonderful. I have had many steel amps but this amp is special. |
