Also if anyone knows of any Julian Tharpe vids (besides the Give A Little, Take A Little on YT or Big Jim Murphy vids besides the Deep Water w Carl Smith or live Paycheck on YT, I'd love to see em!!!

Guys, that video looks like the 70's. I don't know exactly when Mr. Franklin started building his brand of guitars, but Paul played many guitars before that.
Joel, don't know about any Julian vids, but there's a few things of Murph w/Redd Volkaert on YT. About an hours' worth of music on one of them. Search Big Jim Murphy w/Redd Volkaert on youtube. I don't know if I ever got to see Julian, maybe at the Scotty's ISGC, but I saw Murph several times. He was a hoss for sure. Loved his sax playing too. |

I believe Paul was playing a D-10 ZB PSG when he was 15 years of age. ??
At the DJ convention in October 1972 Chuck Wright delivered a S-12 PSG 11 X 6. to Julian Tharpe. Within 3 months Julian was playing a S-14 PSG made by Chuck Wright. Not too long after that Julian went to Sho-Bud & they made him a 14 string guitar known as "The Sho-Bud Jet 14 Steel Guitar".
Johnny Cox was playing a "Jet 14 Guitar" at age 17 on the road with Jim Ed Brown. "Ca. 1976??)

| It's Paul Franklin. The clip is from Hee-Haw, late 1972 when Paul was but a wee 18 year old lad. He was a prodigy. I love the close-up during his solo, his right hand technique is amazing. |

| It's been confirmed a few times. It's Paul. I think he was a part of Barbara's tour band for a time. For anyone that's observed his playing, it's pretty easy to tell just by his mannerisms and watching his hands....and he plays and sounds great, of course. |

| I knew Julian very well, the intro on that song is Julian's,s style note for note. I am totally confused because I know Julian worked with Barbara during that era. Just seems strange that Julian and Paul worked with her and both played a white d/10 Msa....thanks jack |

Okay, folks…
This thread has become a bit silly.
First, Steve Hinson, a Nashville studio musician who knows Paul Franklin personally, said it was Paul Franklin playing with Barbara Mandrell—which should have been enough to answer the question definitively.
Second, as Jerry Overstreet pointed out, the close-up of that young steel guitarist’s hands and unique pick-blocking technique, when compared to close-ups of Paul’s hands--even years later with Dire Straits--is identical.
Finally, the question of who was playing steel on the clip of Barbara Mandrell singing “Satisfied†was discussed several years ago on the SGF: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=215316&sid=e23e423f832e78dba81fa6bdac6bd018 … and Theresa Galbraith posted, “That was 17 year old Paul Franklin playing his MSA!â€.
Personally, I’d take that as the final word on the subject because Theresa (now married to the great guitarist Gregg Galbraith) ought to know-- she is Paul Franklin’s sister!
Are we all in agreement now that it was Paul Franklin playing with Barbara Mandrell on that YouTube clip?

It sure is a young Paul Franklin playing an MSA. They always were a great guitar mechanically but not everybody could make them sound good. I loved and played mine for over 10 years. Paul Sr. Told me Paul asked him to build him a steel that was as mechanically smooth like an MSA but sounded like an Emmons and the Frankln was born, the rest is history!
