I just bought a Carter U-12 on the Forum. I put new strings on it. SIT Stainless Steel, and when sliding the bar on the neck, it has a zinging noise. I figured it was the type string, so I changed them to a new set of Bronze, and they do the same thing. One more question. It has a chrome neck, right under where you pick, it looks like some one used a very coarse type sandpaper, and left scratchy swirls. What could I use to get them off, without more damage. Thanks.

| Jim, I never heard of bronze strings for a pedal steel.. could you mean nickel? I use the 'roller wound' to eliminate the 'zing'. |

Is it chromed, or just polished aluminum? You can try polishing it.

Sorry, yes, nickel. Lane: it looks like chrome to me. I have polished it, but the swirls are still present. It looks like some one tried to remove something, but used an abrasive type paper, or a green type used for pots & pans. I was thinking of trying some chrome polish I have with a polishing disc I have for my dermal. It is a flat surface, at the end of the fret board.

Yeah. Cloth wheel and jeweler's rouge (or other polishing compound).

I also have the "zing" just as you described with SIT Emmons E9 strings. It seems to be worse when the strings are new. A coated bar is much quieter than a regular steel bar. I use the same strings as my coach and he doesn't have that problem. I just assumed it was something I'm doing wrong 
I am going to experiment with other brands as I go forward. I like the SITs because of the extra .011 string but that zing.....!

I have several different bars, and I have tried them all, and they all do the same. So you can wipe that off your list, if it was there.

Lane, it doesn't chatter, but zings when you slide the bar, even when the back of your finger laying on the strings. I have never had this on any one of my other guitars, and right now I have three. My Mullen, or StageOne do not do this. The Carter is the only one.

Jim, you may be hearing extra noise from the fatter low strings of your Uni12 Carter. Keep the heel of your right hand on the strings while sliding the bar, that may mute a little or kill entirely the zinging.

No, the noise seem to be coming more from the mid range strings. I can feel the noise on my finger of my left hand. My right hand pretty much rest on the low strings, as not being use to the 12 strings. I seem to even have more pressure on my right hand. So far it hasn't troubled much, as I have just started with it, but figured I'd ask some more professional players for their thought. Thanks John

| I would try a chrome bar like a BJS or John Pearce and see if that helps. On the other issue the stock polished aluminum neck reflects stage light into your eyes so I "jeweled" mine with a mini sander to matte the finish. |

I'm using the powder coated bars Michael Hillman sells right here on the forum, I'm surprised how much I like them. Really quiets down slides! And much warmer to the touch, and easier to lift off strings. Do still like metal bars, not selling my BJS bars anytime soon, or ever!

I don't have a 12 string bar, but the bar I use is a BJS. I do have so many different bars, and tried the all. Yes, I did check the pick up height. It appears to be right. The 12 string bar is the only thing maybe I need.

Try nickel strings and a chrome bar. Stainless bar on stainless strings is a no no.
Also get in the habit of only covering the strings you are going to pick. The fewer strings you cover, the less string noise. When doing a big move up or down the strings, lift the bar off the strings and mute them with the edge of your left hand. |

| Check the nut rollers, If they are a match set, And someone took them off to cleaned and lube them they may have them out of match with the strings. 1 or more mismatched roller and string can make for weird sounds coming out of the guitar. I use SIT strings on my GFI, and I've never had a problem with that, I don't know why.
