I have a String Question.
Are Jagwire Strings, still in business?
If so...what do you consider better; SIT or Jaguar??
I've been using SIT (stainless steel) for a long time...& I'm not happy with the occasional-sharp, jagged end of the string, that is near the ball end of the string. I don't like the fact that it can dig into the changer fingers. That's not good!!
I have a few Jagwire packs, in Stainless Steel...but, they aren't the Emmons gauges I'm use to. They seem to be very nice.
Also, what is the life of a string, kept in the packet...before putting them on your steel? I have some that are probably 3 years old, hanging around. I'm wondering if they are still good? Will they sound as good, or near...what a new set of strings would sound like?
Thanks! _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

David,I was wondering what brand of guitar you're playing. My hand never gets close to the ball end or the windings on any of my guitars,"Desert Rose& GFI" I always buy a few sets of strings from Fred Justice at the Phoenix show,I think that they are S.I.T.and they work for me,I try to keep my strings in Ziploc bags. _________________ Steeltronics Z-pickup,Desert Rose S-10 4+5,Desert Rose Keyless S-10 3+5... I keep mine in a ziplock bag with a large moisture absorbing packet inside, also that is in a ziplock storage box with the newer ones on the bottom of the stack.. Is that overkill?
I don't know, that's the way I do it to keep them from being scattered all over my packseat. As for the shelflife, if you play out, and change often I don't think it's a problem. _________________ Bill Ford S12 CLR, S12 Lamar keyless, Misc amps&toys Sharp Covers

I've used SIT Buddy Emmons strings for every steel I've ever owned
for 40 years. Still my favorites today, and I never use stainless steel. _________________ aka "Lucky Kay"--Custom built Rittenberry SD10 3X5, Walker S/S, NV-112, and Hilton Pedal |

Stu, it's not the guitar I'm playing, it's that I get these occasional strings, that should not have passed QC. I don't want those defective strings, to scratch or dig into the changer fingers. I'm playing a ZumSteel Encore S-10 w/Bill Lawrence XR-16 Pickup.

Thanks for the suggestion on Zip Lock bags. I'm going start storing my strings that way...or in a Rubbermaid type container.
Where would I be able to buy those moisture absorbent packets? I guess a music store would carry those?
No, I don't think that is "overkill." It's good to be organized like that.

I really like SIT strings, a lot, but I don't like getting the defective strings I get occasionally. I didn't use to like Stainless Steel strings either, but I love them on my ZumSteel Encore. I have a Bill Lawrence XR-16 Pickup, so maybe that has something to do with it?

Very cool information!! Thank you!
Yes, I did mean Jagwire...not Jaguar. What a dope! Have you tried the GHS Americana strings? They surely seem like they would be above average strings?! Nitrogen! Cool. _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

I always feel for the little barb sticking out of the ball end cut off of the unwound strings. Then, I bend the ball end with my thumb and finger, and make sure the barb points away from the changer. The wound strings have a wrap around the ball end, and I make sure the end of the wrap points away from the changer, even though I don't believe the wound strings make that much difference.....Using this method, I've never had a string dig into the changer, and I hardly ever break a string.....I use D'Addario stainless steel E9th sets on my Emmons LGII, and it sounds like an Emmons should. |

I use custom gauges on my D6th. Currently I'm using GHS Sub-Zero Boomers (cryogenic nickel wound) which are also nitro-packed. They sound great! Very true harmonics. They ring!
My gauges aren't available in the nickel-iron "progressive wound" alloy of the GHS Americana sets (which are also cryogenic). That alloy is bit brighter than Boomers nickel.

Thanks b0b,
So, the big question is...I like the brightness of SIT Stainless, in Emmons gauges. Which strings would I like best...or close as possible to stainless, WITHOUT the barb issue I get with SIT, all too much?
It appears as though I will need to switch from .018 to .017, etc. I wonder if I'll like the lighter/balanced gauges? Maybe better, even? _________________ David "DJ" Rupert

Allow me to suggest you try ordering a set with your preferred gauges of LSS E9 Custom Nickel. In my experience over the last few years, these are as bright as regular stainless Jagwires, and stay a lot better in tune than the SIT strings I've tested.
Even though I both raise and lower the 3d string, an 0.0115 LSS string lasts many times longer than other brands I've tested before it has to be replaced. I replace it after about 100 hours of playing anyway, but not because it looses tone or anything. The SIT I've tested lasted about 20 hours of playing before 3d string broke, and by then it sounded awful. |

The cryogenic plain singles are the exact same strings as the Americana E9th sets, so you can get your .018 there. The cryogenic Progressive Wounds are the nickel iron alloy used in the pedal steel sets. www.steelguitarshopper.com/cryogenic/
I describe the alloy as being in between nickel and stainless as far as brightness. _________________ -πππ- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

Cryogenics and a few other specially-made strings are different than the traditional nickel, stainless, phosphor bronze and 80/20 bronze strings used for years on electric (of all type) and acoustic guitars.
When you get to the "normal" stainless and nickel for pedal steel there's very little different between manufacturers. In fact, there are only a few actual string manufacturers, and even fewer string companies that make their own wire (a process called "drawing"). Most string brands are simply private=label packaging (and nowadays, commonly there are different ball-end colors and/or "twist" methods - but not different wire) of major manufacturer-made strings. some of the most expensive are the least "specialized" - strings are one big shell game.
I tend to prefer buying singles in bulk of nickel wound (not plated) and plain strings that come from actual string manufacturers like D'addario. That way I know what I'm actually getting. _________________ No chops, but great tone

There are more than you think. Here's a partial list of actual string manufacturers:
1. Professor String - USA
2. Thomastik-Infeld - Austria
3. D'Addario - USA
4. LaBella/E.O. Mari
5. Rotosound - UK
6. Pyramid - Germany
7. Gibson - USA
8. Ernie Ball - USA
9. GHS - USA
10. Yamaha - Japan
11. Fender - USA/Mexico
12. Dunlop - USA
13. Peavey - USA
14. D'Aquisto - USA
15. Black Diamond - USA
16. Vinci - USA
17. Elixir - USA
18. S.I.T. - USA
19. Newtone Strings - UK
20. Cleartone - USA
21. Martin - USA
22. GSM - USA
23. Dean Markley - USA
24. DR Strings - USA
25. Curt Mangan - USA
I'm sure there are many more. Guitar string manufacturing equipment isn't as exotic as the myth would have you believe.

Do they draw the steel and coat it, or do they buy wire, wrap the wound strings and attach ball ends. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)
