Hello, all! I recently acquired this lovely early-50's Console Grande...

...and I couldn't be happier, except for the legs, of course. Mine are not the extension legs and I want to have the option of standing, but I can't seem to find any extension legs with the proper outside diameter of 3/4", and they would be pretty wobbly even if I did. I'm this close to installing some of those sockets on the bottom to enhance its usability. My question is, are there any options I haven't thought of, and how much, if any would it hurt the value? I'm not at all interested in altering such an uncommon instrument if I have a choice, but we are talking a few screws in the bottom. If I ever sell, I would likely sell it here, so any opinions?

If you have the three legged model, the legs on those leave a lot to be desired, awfully wobbly.
When Don Helms played that model he redid the legs.
I don't have them installed yet but I bought a set of legs and flanges from Gary Sill. These are the screw in type and you can mount the flanges on the exterior of the cabinet.
Nice guitar, by the way. Very Happy

Beautiful Instrument! Cool

You probably already thought of this, but you could make a platform with adjustable legs and set the Guitar minus legs on that. If needed, the platform could have some brackets to hold down the Guitar. Platform and brackets could have some felt or similar to protect the Guitar.

Enjoy! Cool

If that awesome Console Grande were mine, the first thing I'd do is acquire another Deluxe34 stand from fellow Forumite Mark Roeder. (I just ordered my third Deluxe34 with customized brackets to hold two lap steels. Though far from inexpensive, it's just awesome.)

Eschew the factory legs, set it on the stand, and viola! Why risk devaluing that beautiful instrument? Changing out most anything besides the strings would likely affect its collectible value.

Gibson didn't have to stray much farther afield than a couple hundred miles north of Kalamazoo to acquire wonderfully figured maple. They reportedly reserved their finest woods for their naturally finished instruments. Your natural finish Console Grande would seem to affirm that notion.

Boy that is slick! It looks like it might break down into something that could fit in the case... Anybody know if this is true?

P.S. Thanks for the compliments! My blurry phone picture does not do justice to the figuring in the maple. Even though sunburst is the "classic" gibson look, I have always preferred the look of their natural instruments. Oh, it also plays nice and sounds fantastic! I really lucked out on this one.

Matt, I had the same problem with my like new '53 Console Grande well over a decade ago. George Piburn of "George Board" guitars set me up with 4 of his nicely machined leg flanges for the standard 7/8 14 legs that are available every where. Never looked back. Jay Y

My mistake, 7/8 14 is not the size. It is the standard thread that has been accepted now for a life time. Jay

Mine all break down and fit into their included carry bag.

Many years ago I purchased a Fender Deluxe 8 that didn't include the legs. After getting it home, I tried an Atlas microphone stand, and found it worked perfectly. The large diameter (bottom) fit the threaded mounting plates of the guitar, and a trip to the hardware store provided the small rubber tips that were used for the small diameter lower portion of the legs.

The music store was selling off his rental equipment, so the microphone stands were very inexpensive.

It might be worth a try on your guitar.

That guitar is gorgeous! Whoa!

I was fortunate that my Grande came with a second set of telescoping legs.
