They also don't say who's playing the mandolin...I suspect it could be David Nelson,as he played mando on their first albumn too,just guessin'.
If you go to their website it lists Buddy Cage as the pedal steel guitarist, dobro player in the credits for the "Powerglide" albumn.The only credit listed on the vinyl record is J.Dawson.
I have no doubt who is playing psg on this cut, I've listened to this albumn so much it's practically worn out. His style is different than Jerry Garcia who was the previous psg player for the NRPS.

As a young man, [Lord in Heaven, 40 years ago now!] I wore that album out,, and Brujo, and, Home Home on the Road, and Gypsy Cowboy, Panama Red, New Riders, New Riders of the Purple Sage,Oh what a Mighty Time, Who are These Guys? Marin County Line,, etc, etc... The quality started to suffer as the years passed, but from 1970 to about 1976, they had some truly great country rock stuff.. Too bad it never got much airplay outside of AOR stations , and maybe a few of the California stations.. Buddy was a huge influence on me, and adapting what I could from his style served me very well over about 38 years of my own playing on stage.. He had a distinctive style that was part traditional country E9, part "west coast" and part "hippie steel".. He had a very nice kind of over exaggerated blocking style that worked very well with the music they were doing... I miss those days, and that great music... bob

Buddy was my first steel influence; even though I had NRPS & then got Powerglide, I never bothered checking the credits on the first album to find Jerry was the steeler. Saw them in concert many times;saw them at a bowling alley in Bayside, Queens, but their best being early 70s at Queensboro Community College, although I believe Bobby Black was the steeler that night. British folk-rockers Tranquility was the opening act, and their claim to fame was the most spectacular vocal harmony of any band back then. One of the best nights of music ever.

I saw the NRPS/Grateful Dead on New Years eve in 1971/72? I believe somewhere in 'Frisco with Buddy...they were awesome and very tight then-blew the Dead away IMHO but the Dead were just different, more than a jam band. In those early days the Dead was like all the members of the band were soloists..Loved Bill Kreutsman especially!
I think I had too much kool aid that night too! I loved his playing-too cool with their custom made cowboy shirts! The merry pranksters were there too.

Here's the one that embodies everything about Buddy's style that we love.. Crooked Judge.. One chord the entire song, and they let Buddy just rip all over it at warp speed, blowing the vocals off to the side... I recall back in the day, oh about 40 years or so ago, playing this one hour after hour, all day week after week, until I could play it at the exact speed and each lick and nuance in its proper place.. Don't recall if I got it exact, but I do know I got it real close back when I was in my early 20's..
Nowadays,?? can't keep up with it at all... sad to say.. just tried, and its not going to happen.. Age and all..
