Does anyone know what Jeff Newman's setup for his U-12 was. In his U-12 course, he has 3 knees, and discourages a second knee on the left, because of the vertical lever, but one his YouTube with Look At Us, and others with the Red Carter, he has 4 knees, plus the vertical. I know he uses the day pedal setup, and the E changes on the right knee. Just bought a Carter on the Forum, thought it was already setup to Jeff's, but it wasn't. Not sure if I can change it over myself or not. I haven't worked on one with this many changes. Who would I get parts for this from too.

Get parts from Al Brisco at Steel Guitars of Canada.
Carters are fairly easy to work on.
I'd use a square to measure distances from front apron to center of fingers, and to center the bellcranks

I use the LKR so that it can be folded up and stay up out of the way. Just tighten it up.

Jeff used 4 kl, including the vert. He had no LKR. His pedal set up was Day.

He lowered the E's to Eb on RKR along with D# to C#.

He also lowered D# to C# on RKL along with raising 9th string B to D.

He raised all three E's to F on LKL.

He raised all three G#'s to A on the B pedal

He lowered 5th string only on the LKV.

He used 4 pedals on the B6 side. He did not have the common 4th pedal C6 raise of A to B, instead he had the boo-wah pedal there and omitted pedal 4 change altogether.

The remaining pedals 5,6&7 were the standard 6th arrangement.

Here is a cobbled up chart of his basic tuning. Apologies for the mess, but I hope it helps. JO.

And Jerry, if I remember, he used to lower only the top two E's to Eb with RKR, right? Otherwise you lose that glorious major 7th when the lowest E stays on E.

I did not know about the Eb string lowering to C# on RKR, that could be very useful. My setup is very close to Jeff's, altho' I keep the E's on separate knees for complex reasons which I'm sure nobody else will agree with! Laughing

About a year ago Dec.2 2015 to be exact. I put my MSA S10 in the case and under the bed and set up a GFI Ultra S12U. I feel comfortable with the E9 tuning including the 9th string being a B but raises with the LKL to D and lowers string 2 to C#. I bought the GFI 2nd hand from a friend and he threw in a set new SIT strings and a Jeff Newman 12U tuning DVD. On the DVD Jeff shows only Strings 4 and 8 Raising to F. But if you go to JefFran College website (12U Tuning) It shows 4,8 and 11 raising to F. I have this setup on the GFI and it gives 9-10-11 a octave lower as 5-6-8. I have found a few uses for these strings. On the DVD it shows the D lever RKR also lowering string 2 from D# to C# along with 4 and 8 from E to D#.
I will try to scan and post a chart of my tuning with penny lower and raise sweetened tuning in the next few days.

The DVD shows Jeff, RKR as lowering the E's, RKL is raising the E's to F. He has the Day setup on the pedals. He says his is the Universal setup. The Day has the E changes all on the left knees. I wish I knew more about the setups, but I'm so confused about all of it, I don't really know which is the best. I have always used the Emmons, but have used it with the RKL lowering the E, and after 15 years I still find myself using it, but it makes some strange sounds when you do. My two sense anyway.

I have Jeffs last album "Once in a Lifetime" on my playlist in my car and listen to it regularly. The more I listen to it the more I realise what a great great player Jeff was and how different his approach was to others. What he pulls out of his fairly Simple U-12 tuning is amazing. He was a great teacher but also a great player.

I use Jeff's set up on my U-12 Zum with a LKR. It raises the first and second strings F#- G# and D# - E, plus it lowers the sixth string G#-F#. The sixth string lower can be used with B pedal to get a G note on that string. That knee doesn't get in the way even with a small flag on it.

Ivan, I sure agree with you about Jeff. He was up with the best players, and he did use a different approach. I have not been able to become a good player, he makes an easy way to learn. He shows a lot on his E9th/B6 DVD, but some of what is on here is not correct. I just got a Carter U-12, it was to be setup like Jeff's, but wasn't. Not sure if I'll change it, or just put it up for sale. I can't even play a 10 string. I wish I could but it's not in the cards. I don't think anyone has tried harder Anyway, all someone has to do is get the DVD and Jeff explains his entire setup and the tuning.
