I'm sure there must be threads on this already but I can't seem to find them...
I've been asked to add some tracks via Skype and, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do it with adequate sound quality and without latency issues.
Even though I hear about this being done, I have no clue how to do it right. (To be clear, I've used Skype to 'talk along' during recordings and it's great for that. I just can't figure out how you'd actually record with any kind of sonic quality.)
Any of you have experience with this? |

I don't think it would be useable for high fidelity recording. The quality isn't great to begin with, and the delay or 'lag,' plus dropouts, would be a big problem. I would suggest just getting a rough mix, recording against it on your end (maybe with Skype running as a way to communicate with the producer), and then sending the file when it's done. _________________ http://pedalsteelpodcast.wordpress.com |

Agreeing with Bryan. Anything recorded with Skype would be "AM radio" quality.
I wonder what the producer has in mind.

Did you miss understand the producer ? Is the producer not familiar with the internet ? _________________ Bob |

It can't be done on skype because of latency issues, just try to clap in time with someone you're skyping with, it doesn't work, but the idea isn't without merit.
Charly Steinberg, of Steinberg Research, has developed this concept years ago, not sure if it ever caught on, but the idea is to play together via medium-fi streaming in real time and record files locally at hi res to be shared after the fact.

Skype won't work.
Does the recording need to be done in real time?
If not, get yourself a box.com account and transfer files that way.
Maybe you could use Skype to comunicate your ideas to each other, but playing together while using Skype is a nightmare. |
