If you had a Steel and was only allowed to use one lever and one pedal. How would you use them?

Bill,
I'd go back to playing like I did in the 50's with one pedal, before the A+B split, and NO knees. You use the bar slants more but I could play most any of the current hits at that time.

Perhaps use them to change the basic open tuning and play the guitar as a non-pedal guitar.

I think I would use the pedal as the A pedal and use the lever as the B pedal.

I would tune to C6, D on top. The pedal would be Pedal 5, the lever would be the standard Pedal 6.

Jeff's got it!!!,,,that would be as versatile as one could get,,,,especially for swing and older standards,,,,and a few slants would take care of everything else. I've been thinking about building a keyless (I'm "keyless to the core!!!") lap steel,,,8,,,maybe 10 string,,with 2 levers. Lately I've been limiting myself to only using the " 5 and 6 pedal" to see how it would work.

Let me throw something else in,,,,I really don't like the "version" of the IV chord that the 6 pedal makes,,,,any suggestions?

Sonny, on my D10 I lower string 2 along with string 6 as opposed to the typical raise. I very much prefer the sound of the 7b on top of that chord and not the root. Have you tried that?

I would put both A and B pedal changes on the pedal, like Roger said. And on the one lever, raise both E's. You can cover a lot of songs that way.

My inspiration on Pedal Steel, Chuck Manchester, started out as a kid playing lap steel in the 50's and didn't get his first pedal steel until the early 70's. When I met him he was playing a Dekley double 12. His advice for E9 was to master the A&B pedals ane E raise and lower, and bar slants. He is old school and used slants all the time. His approach to C6 is the same. He told me he only used a couple of the pedals on C6. He sounded fantastic. Living proof that less can sound just as good as more.
