| Ron, I am using Quilter. Weight is a little under 35 lbs if I recall correctly. My personal thought it is as good if not better than any thing out their. To each his own on that thought. From what I seen on forum they selling for around a 1000.00 give or take a few dollars. |

I think it depends on what kind of steel you're playing.
For just lap steel, I would maybe suggest the Fender Blues Jr. |

Anything with a 1x12 neodymium speaker (Telonics, Eminence, etc...) is going to be pretty easy to tote.
If money is no object, then the Milkman and Little Walter amps are hard to beat, but the former is going to be more compact as it has onboard reverb. I've had mixed experience with the Nashville 112, but the one I have now sounds really really great at the recommended presets in the manual.

I play through the Milkman Half and Half with a 12. I have a closed back extension cab with a 15 for when I want more air morning.. But on its own it sounds great.
I also played the Evans RE300 and it was great.

Talk to them. As I understand it, they are so flexible and customizable that many variations just aren't included.
Unless one believes that it doesn't exist unless it's on the web.

Bob Case had a 15" version that he and a couple of others played through...I had the Mini 12" and Neil Flanz and I played through that...

I would look at all those amazing little class d power amps. There are tons of them out there,mostly for bass players, but work great for steel. You could get a head for a couple hundred bucks. Or a powered speaker with a pre amp.
I'm not into telonics and quilter type amps personally. They sound steril and annoying to me. I prefer the give and take sag of a milkman. Or a Sarno V8....Warm , open and full in the right places.
To others they are not present enough so it really is a matter of taste.
Keep in mind that you are in Texas now so your amp needs to extremely loud. I've never consistently had to deal with ear shattering stage volumes in any other scene.

I have not tried them yet but I intend to: DV Mark. They are made by the same manufacturer of Markbass amps. Seem very small, clean sounding. There are a few Youtube reviews, mostly with jazz guitarists. I intend to try out the Little Jazz for lap steel: Solid state, 50w, 8" speaker, less than 15 pounds and judging by Youtube reviews, a nice reverb. There are larger models with 12" speakers.
Be interesting to hear anyones real life experience.

Just to throw this out there:
The Super Champ XD is not a bad small steel amp. A Super Champ XD thru a nice steel speaker is pretty good. It may not keep up with a loud drummer, but it's very much not bad.
Three settings on the SCXD would seem to be good starting places:
- The 'A' channel, which is sort of Princeton or Deluxe-ey.
- 'B' channel, model 1, the (very compressed ) tweed sound.
- 'B' channel, model 15, a "jazz king" model.
A speaker swap ( many call out the 10" Ragin Cajun ) for the SCXD might make a perfectly useable setup. I have not done this myself.
They're no longer available new ( I tried an X2 and traded it for a guitar ) but they show up Reverb all the time. |

| I have an old fender super reverb in a single 12" cabinet. I have a TT12 speaker in it. I have been using this for a couple years now. I love the tone. I know others will jump in and comment on the impedance mismatch. It works great, haven't had any problems. It's amazing tone, very loud if you need it to be, and yet portable. I don't have to drag around my heavy twin reverbs. |
