hi i'am going to install a bl705 pick up on my mullen rp guitar and install to the existing wiring that's there need help on how to wire the 705 to the existing wiring or if anyone has a diagram or a video on how to do this ?

Red wire is the full hot wire, black and braid go to ground.
Tie the white and green together and either:
1) tape them together so they won't get in mischief, or;
2) hide a spst switch under the guitar like along the apron and put the white/green pair on one side, and the other side to ground (if you're me, you'll do this, because the 705 is a good light-wound honky-tonk single coil pickup). When the switch is open, it's a humbucker, when it's closed, you short one coil to ground and only one coil sends a signal

I installed one of these in my BMI and found the red was the hot wire. Got this info from a dealer on these pups.

Just put al L705 in my GFI the red was hot.....the green and white came already tied together
Plan on adding a switch when I get one
It's brought out the Fender sound out of the GFI |

For the 705 reissue:
Red = hot
White and green = inside ends of coils, tie together for normal series humbucking
Black = ground
The original 705 4-wire version may have had different color assignments.
I have the reissue in my Carter and just put one in my GFI. Nice pickup for those two guitars.
On the GFI I wired a switch to let me select either half of the pickup for the single coil mode. I wanted to see if there was much of a difference. It's noticeable but the difference isn't significant.
A series/parallel switch is useful as well. Sounds like a single coil but is humbucking. |

| Hi Bruce....did you make any modifications to the pickup on your GFI? I put one in mine but its only 3mm which is about 2/16" from the strings and keeps distorting my amps....tried taking the base plate off but its stuck on there. Nice sounding pickup but I need a way of lowering it a few mm |

Roger, I just checked my GFI. Looks like 0.140" or about 3.5 mm from bar magnet to bottom of string at both sides, strings 1 and 10.
When I installed it I had to drill a new hole for the pickup cable. The original hole was at the corner of the pickup to accommodate the original GFI II pickup's wire location. If I hadn't drilled a new hole the pickup would have sat too high because of the wire underneath.
Jim Palenscar sold me the used 705 I put in there. It had come out of another GFI. He said the 705's mounting plate has to be shaved a bit to fit the GFI, and that had already been done on my pickup. I don't think that affected the mounting height, though.
The 705 in my Carter is much closer to the strings, 0.085" at string 1 and 0.1" at string 10. Hasn't been a problem but maybe I'll try lowering it a bit. |
