I`m curious to know what is the best kind of wire to use when wiring and soldering pot to jacks in volume pedals and if it effects tone in any way like cables is a factor in tone changes. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks in advance guys! _________________ Dale |

If the pedal body is metal, it is essentially shielded, so just use some good, single conductor, copper, stranded, insulated wire. Probably 18 gauge or so. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

Thanks Scott for your reply. I will make sure to use quality wire. I was also wondering if using different types of wire has any effect on tone changes on your guitar? _________________ Dale |

As far as the wire in the pedal, I doubt it will make much difference as the wiring is so short.
When soldering wires or connectors, make sure you have a good shiny soldering job. Use only enough heat to make it flow.
As for guitar and patch cables, as long as you use a good quality cable is the main thing. Capacitance in the cable is what affects sound. Least capacitance is better.
Don't scrimp on connectors. Make sure they are well made. I've seen a lot of 1/4" connectors that the tip connection to the inner terminal was so loose it would cut out constantly. On store that used to sell radios and parts, but now cells cell phones, had some plugs that you could grab the tip of the plug and pull the tip out of the connector. _________________ Amateur Radio Operator NA4IT (Extra)

The wiring in my volume pedals appears to be about 22 ga. regular single jacketed, stranded hookup wire.
App. dimensions in inches measured with a dig. caliper:
bare wire= .025
wire w/insulation=.056
Short runs usually just a few inches. Size not critical in this application, IMO. I don't believe there is any advantage or disadvantage for a particular small ga. wire here, within limits. I keep several rolls of basic hookup wire of this gauge. This is what I use in situations like this and for building mini effects boxes, etc. Never had a problem.
You might inquire of Jim or Kevin at Goodrich, or other pedal mfgrs. for the expert advice. |

Jerry is right on the string gauges. Stranded wire, 22 or even 24 is all that is needed. |
