Leaving out of Oakland early Saturday morning for a week in Hawaii, will be on Oahu the entire time. It's wedding anniversary #35 for my wife and I - yikes! Where did the time go?
I have been to the other major islands in the past and never had any success finding steel (haven't been over there during any of the actual steel guitar festivals) and I know historically the best bet to hear real Hawaiian steel guitar playing is around Waikiki.
As a kid taking lessons for a few years in the '60s being taught along with traditional country, a little western swing, pop, and some gospel, there was quite a bit of Hawaiian and it's always held a special place for me.
So you can imagine how bummed out I was to find out that after playing pretty much every Thursday evening at the Waikiki Marriott for 20 years with his group, Alan Akaka's gig there is no more.
It literally ended last Thursday on October 27. I messaged Alan and he doesn't have any gigs coming up during our trip.
Any ideas where I can find some steel guitar music next week? _________________ Mark |

Just received an update from Bobby Ingano that I also posted on Reso Hangout for a member there who will be visiting Hawaii in January:
Quote: |
I received a message on Facebook from a great Hawaiian player, Bobby Ingano, and he will be playing with his trio on Monday evening from 6 to 9 at Dot's Restaurant in Wahiawa Town, about 22 miles north of Honolulu. I believe it is a regular gig for him. With no traffic it is around a 35 minute drive from Honolulu. Probably close to 50 minutes with traffic.
My wife and I will be at Pearl Harbor Monday afternoon visiting the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial and we are planning on heading up to Dot's afterward.

The driving info to Wahiawa is based on my Google research. Any additional information from our members who are locals is appreciated!
And that of course includes any other steel performances happening next week. _________________ Mark |
