The Emmons Company produced their GS-10 Student Model in a variety of finishes, including a sunburst lacquer and the more common 'mica "bowling ball."

I hardly ever see the sunburst model around. I got a bowling ball/pipe burl model GS10 in a trade. Friend of mine found it at an estate sale so I offered hime a Squire tele for it. Want to add couple of levers to it one day and have light weight rig for when I get older. What a tone it has. Stays in tune really good too. I prefer the sunburst but am happy to have my little bowling ball model. It's a fun little steel!

My first steel was an Emmons GS-10, but I have no idea if it was Bowling Ball finish. It's a rosewood color and was built in 1974 with three pedals and one knee. Its' tone was awesome, even through a little Peavey Rage 108 amplifier I was using at the time I started playing. It's the guitar I played at my very first steel guitar show in 2004 in Hollonville, Georgia

As the proud owner of a bowling ball GS-10, I have to admit it is the ugliest finish by far, but the sound is fantastic.

...and a transparent lacquer in ANY color always wins over a gaudy sunburst... I only play my vintage RI Strat in the dark so I don't have to see the color... Winking
